Predicting Self-Esteem and Intentions to Seek Counseling: The Internalized Stigma Model
This investigation introduced the Internalized Stigma Model to test the mechanisms by which the stigma of mental illness and of seeking psychological help affect self-esteem and intentions to seek counseling. We hypothesized that both stigmas would predict decreased self-esteem, but only stigma of seeking psychological help would predict decreased intentions to seek counseling. Furthermore, we predicted that these links follow a process wherein people’s perceptions of societal stigma are fully mediated by internalization of that stigma. Public stigmas predict their respective self-stigmas, which subsequently predict ...

Mindfulness, Psychological Flexibility, and Counseling Self-Efficacy: Hindering Self-Focused Attention as a Mediator
The purpose of this study was to explore the mechanism by which counselor trainees’ mindfulness and psychological flexibility are positively associated with counseling self-efficacy. First, it was hypothesized that having fewer experiences of hindering self-focused attention (i.e., counselor trainees’ awareness of their own anxiety and distracting thoughts in sessions) would mediate the association between mindfulness and counseling self-efficacy. Second, it was hypothesized that having fewer experiences of hindering self-focused attention would mediate the association between psychological flexibility and coun...

A combination of external and internalized oppressions was associated uniquely with psychological distress whereas the two internalized oppressions were linked uniquely with life satisfaction and self-esteem. The Racist discrimination x Internalized racism, Racist discrimination...

International Education and Service Learning: Approaches Toward Cultural Competency and Social Justice
The field of counseling psychology continues to see a perpetual underutilization of mental health resources by many cultural groups, including international populations. Underutilization of services is due, in part, to psychologists’ deficiency in cultural and international competency. International education—an experiential learning technique that involves cultural contact—has been proposed as an alternative method for training students to work effectively cross-culturally. The current article examines the effects of service learning embedded in a study abroad diversity course in Singapore. The course wa...

Social Justice Beyond the Classroom: Responding to the Marathon Bombing's Islamophobic Aftermath
Counseling psychology doctoral programs across the country are working to develop new approaches to bring social justice to the curriculum. Boston College has done so, in part, through a course titled Counseling in Context. The three core emphases are (a) ongoing self-examination of power and privilege, (b) applying traditional counseling skills to community-level problems, and (c) building from a clear intellectual and values framework. Building on an ally development conceptual frame, we illustrate how these principles were used to develop an intervention to combat Islamophobia on campus in the wake of the Boston Maratho...

Lesbian and Queer Women Professors Disclosing in the Classroom: An Act of Authenticity
Lesbian and queer women professors are faced with the personal decision of whether to disclose their sexual identities in the classroom. The experiences of 10 participants in Calgary, Canada were explored through semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. The analysis revealed one overarching category: enacting authenticity. The sub-themes within this major finding include fighting for one’s identity, modeling authenticity, and the freedom and connection felt by self-disclosing. Three supplementary findings and the sub-themes within are also expanded and discussed: classroom structure factors, self-disclosure timing, an...

Educating Undergraduate Students to Work With Children of Abused Women
Student learning was assessed in an innovative university–community partnership in which undergraduate students enrolled, first, in a didactic course on intimate partner violence and, subsequently, in a service-learning course where they worked with children living in a shelter for survivors of intimate partner violence. Data were collected at the start and end of the first semester, and at the end of the second semester. Quantitative and qualitative methods indicated that students gained knowledge regarding intimate partner violence, resources available to survivors, and how to respond to a friend in an abusive rela...
