Social networks and the emergence of health inequalities following a medical advance: Examining prenatal H1N1 vaccination decisions
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Elaine M. Hernandez, Erin Pullen, Jonathan BrauerAbstractHealth inequalities persist, in part, because people in socioeconomically advantageous positions possess resources to avoid new health risks when medicine advances. Although these health decisions rarely occur in isolation, we know less about the specific role of networks. We examine whether social capital mediates the relationship between individual educational attainment and decisions about a medical advance: H1N1 vaccination during pregnancy. Building on prior work that defines social capital ...

Cheater's hide and seek: Strategic cognitive network activation during ethical decision making
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Catherine T. Shea, Julia Lee, Tanya Menon, Dong-Kyun ImAbstractWe consider the dynamic process by which people cognitively activate their social networks during ethical decision making. We compare actors’ goals during anticipatory and ex-post phases of ethical decision making, and propose that they trigger hide-and-seek patterns of network activation. Experiment 1 links cognitively activated network structures with self-report ethical behavior. Consistent with “hiding goals,” actors randomly assigned to anticipate behaving unethically (versus hon...

An efficient counting method for the colored triad census
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Jeffrey Lienert, Laura Koehly, Felix Reed-Tsochas, Christopher Steven MarcumAbstractThe triad census is an important approach to understand local structure in network science, providing comprehensive assessments of the observed relational configurations between triples of actors in a network. However, researchers are often interested in combinations of relational and categorical nodal attributes. In this case, it is desirable to account for the label, or color, of the nodes in the triad census. In this paper, we describe an efficient algorithm for cons...

The influence of network structure and prosocial cultural norms on charitable giving: A multilevel analysis of Movember’s fundraising campaigns in 24 countries
This study examines how the interplay between an online campaign’s network structure and prosocial cultural norms in a country affect charitable giving. We conducted a multilevel analysis that includes Twitter network and aggregated donation data from the 2013 Movember fundraising campaigns in 24 countries during 62 campaign days. Prosocial cultural norms did not affect the relationship between network size and average donations raised, nor did they affect the relationship between network centralization and average donation amount. Prosocial cultural norms did affect the relationship between network density and average d...

Formal and informal cross-cluster networks and the role of funding: A multi-level network analysis of the collaboration among publicly and privately funded cluster organizations and their managers
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Michael Wältermann, Georg Wolff, Olaf RankAbstractCollaboration between institutionalized cluster organizations as a means of connecting firms across regions and sectors has recently received growing policy attention. Using a multi-level network approach, we explore the influence of different funding types (primarily private vs. primarily public) on the propensity of cluster organizations to enter into partnerships and of cluster managers to exchange advice. Analyzing data from 82 clusters in Germany, we show that while privately funded cluster organi...

What drives participatory policy processes: Grassroot activities, scientific knowledge or donor money? – A comparative policy network approach
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Christian Henning, Christian Aßmann, Johannes Hedtrich, Julian Ehrenfels, Eva KrampeAbstractA policy network approach has been developed to assess participatory policy processes in Ghana, Senegal, and Uganda. Theoretically, political influence measures correspond to two different influence mechanisms: vote-buying and informational lobbying. For each mechanism, separate measures were defined and empirically derived from corresponding policy networks. Exponential random graph models were used to assess the network-generating process, which allows for an...

Team efficiency and network structure: The case of professional League of Legends
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Marçal Mora-Cantallops, Miguel-Ángel SiciliaAbstractTeams can be defined by their interactions and successful performance rests on their members’ behaviour. Although this topic has been studied both in sports and management, research on computer mediated team interactions, communication, cooperative work and efficiency in online competitive environments is scarce. In this article, networks will be used as a novel approach to understand how League of Legends professional players assist each other during a competitive match and to link their computer...

Inequality in social capital in Chile: Assessing the importance of network size and contacts’ occupational prestige on status attainment
This study examines the relationship between social capital and four measures of status attainment, including job prestige and employment income. We use data from the first wave of the Longitudinal Social Study of Chile (ELSOC), a representative survey of the Chilean urban population aged 18–75 years. We analyse a subsample of 1,351 individuals who are currently employed. A Bayesian model of over-dispersion with relational data is used to estimate the size of the network, a novel measure of social capital. We analyse the data set using linear and logistic regression models and a complementary path analysis, first estimat...

Stability and dynamics of communities on online question–answer sites
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Saskia Metzler, Stephan Günnemann, Pauli MiettinenAbstractSocial networks are present in our everyday lives, not just in face to face communication, but also when we communicate through the Internet. The latter leaves massive traces of data and thereby opens opportunities to acquire a better understanding of social communities in general. In this work, we are particularly interested in the patterns of volunteer efforts within the communities. To that end, we examine the community structure of several large online question–answer sites and how they e...

The networks and success of female entrepreneurs in China
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Ronald S. BurtAbstractDespite population opinion in China favoring men over women, data on a large probability sample of Chinese entrepreneurs show that men and women — on average — build similar network structures, experience similar distributions of network advantage, achieve similar levels of business success, and experience similar performance returns to their network advantage. Digging into network content, male and female entrepreneurs have similarly close and trusting relations with similar kinds of contacts, with one exception, gender homop...

Multiple partitioning of multiplex signed networks: Application to European parliament votes
Publication date: Available online 6 March 2019Source: Social NetworksAuthor(s): Nejat Arinik, Rosa Figueiredo, Vincent LabatutAbstractFor more than a decade, graphs have been used to model the voting behavior taking place in parliaments. However, the methods described in the literature suffer from several limitations. The two main ones are that 1) they rely on some temporal integration of the raw data, which causes some information loss; and/or 2) they identify groups of antagonistic voters, but not the context associated with their occurrence. In this article, we propose a novel method taking advantage of multiplex signe...

Toxic ties: corporate networks of market control in the European chemical industry, 1960–2000
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Hubert Buch-Hansen, Lasse Folke HenriksenAbstractThis paper contributes to filling a gap in existing network scholarship by bringing into focus how companies utilize corporate networks of market control when confronted with uncertainties in their political-economic environment. Outlining a network theory of market control and taking the European chemical industry as its case, the paper utilizes original data to track board interlocks, cartel ties and mergers among the 24 largest chemical companies from 1960 to 2000. While a densely connected industry t...

Naïve learning in social networks with random communication
Publication date: July 2019Source: Social Networks, Volume 58Author(s): Jia-Ping Huang, Bernd Heidergott, Ines LindnerAbstractWe study social learning in a social network setting where agents receive independent noisy signals about the truth. Agents naïvely update beliefs by repeatedly taking weighted averages of neighbors’ opinions. The weights are fixed in the sense of representing average frequency and intensity of social interaction. However, the way people communicate is random such that agents do not update their belief in exactly the same way at every point in time. Our findings, based on Theorem 1, Corollary 1 a...
