Since 2000, U.S. government health research agencies have spent almost $1 billion on an effort to churn out thousands of 3D structures of proteins. The Protein Structure Initiative (PSI) funded large teams of biologists, physicists, chemists, and engineers to transform the science of protein analysis. Early in April, the first of a fleet of environmental monitoring satellites will lift off from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The Sentinel-1A satellite is part of a program called Copernicus, which will launch a half-dozen craft over the next 7 years and then send up an identical copy of each to boost data gathering and serve as backups. [News & Analysis] Oceanography: Chemical Atlas Shows Where Seas Are Tainted—And Where They Can Bloom
The new atlas, which shows the distribution of important trace metals and other substances, is the first product of GEOTRACES, a $300 million international effort. It draws on careful measurements from more than 30,000 seawater samples drawn from nearly 800 locations. Antiretroviral drugs can protect people from becoming infected by HIV. But so-called pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, only works if people take pills daily—which studies show they have trouble doing. Now, monkey experiments with an integrase inhibitor that's injected show how a single shot protects them from the AIDS virus for 11 weeks on average. [News Focus] Can Down Syndrome Be Treated?
The cognitive impairments of Down syndrome, which is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, have long been considered untreatable, but recent advances in neuroscience and genetics are starting to raise the prospect of pharmaceutical interventions. Several clinical trials of drugs to improve memory and learning in adults with Down syndrome are now under way. If the trials succeed, the new drugs could help people with Down syndrome live more independently, but running the trials raises some logistical and ethical challenges, including recruiting enough participants and gaining their informed consent.
