Impact of a Clinical Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacist on Tacrolimus Nephrotoxicity, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, and Institutional Revenue Generation in Adult Kidney Transplant Recipients
Context: Tacrolimus requires close therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to ensure efficacy and minimize adverse effects. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned on transplant teams to interpret levels and recommend therapy modifications. Their impact in the immediate postoperative setting has not been described previously. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a clinical solid organ transplant pharmacist on nephrotoxicity, TDM, and revenue generation in adult kidney transplant recipients on tacrolimus. Design, Setting, and Patients: Retrospective assessment of adult kidney transplant recipients at University of Florida Health Sh...

Source and Message Framing Considerations for Recruiting Mature Adults as Organ Donors Through Direct Mail Campaigns
Conclusions: Overall, the findings speak to the effectiveness of direct mail marketing campaign’s ability to register potential organ donors. Moreover, the results reveal that it is more important who sends the message as opposed to what the message states. (Source: Progress in Transplantation)

Concern for Lost Income Following Donation Deters Some Patients From Talking to Potential Living Donors
Conclusion: Findings from the current study underscore how concern about income loss for living donors may affect decision-making by both transplant candidates and potential donors. (Source: Progress in Transplantation)

Measuring Coping Behavior in Liver Transplant Candidates: A Psychometric Analysis of the Brief COPE
This study assessed the validity of the Brief COPE in 120 liver transplant candidates using exploratory factor analysis. Results revealed a 6-factor solution, only 2 of which were consistent with the original scale assignments. Construct validity of the 6 Brief COPE scales yielded in this study was demonstrated. The results indicate that the Brief COPE is valid, reliable, and can be meaningfully interpreted in liver transplant patients. Future research should confirm this factor structure and examine its predictive validity prior to widespread use among liver transplant patients. Suggestions are presented for enhancing the...

Depression, Resource Utilization, and Outcomes Following Liver Transplant
Conclusion: Inadequately treated depression led to increased health-care resource utilization. Patients with adequately treated depression had similar outcomes as those with no depression. Use of sleep aids early post-LTX may be a surrogate indicator of inadequately treated depression. (Source: Progress in Transplantation)

Overcoming Challenges: Breathing Hope Through Teamwork and Long-Distance Thoracic Transplantation
Lung donation and transplantation is increasing in volume annually, yet there continues to be a shortage of available organs for transplant. Despite this shortage, suitable lungs are occasionally not transplanted due to logistical issues. Issues such as time and distance can be a major barrier in deceased donor organ recovery and transplantation. This single case study serves as an example of the teamwork and cooperation that resulted in the successful transplantation of lungs in spite of long-distance logistical issues between the donor and the recipient. All of the members who contributed to this collaboration recognized...

Organ Procurement in Forensic Deaths: Specific Features of Nonheart-Beating Donors
The need for organs has increased in the recent years, and this shortage will only worsen. In addition to the organs procured from brain-dead donors, a procedure for non-heart-beating donors was therefore developed. When deaths involve legal proceedings, the medical examiner makes the decision of whether or not to remove organs. To assist medical examiner in their decision-making, a number of forensic scientific societies aimed to develop recommendations, and legal adjustments were adopted. Nevertheless, these do present certain limits in special cases of procurement: Maastricht class I and II non-heart-beating donors. The...

Utility and Usability of the Rapid Assessment of Hospital Procurement Barriers in Donation (RAPiD) as a Tool for OPO Hospital Development Staff
Context: Few systematic assessment tools are available to organ procurement organizations (OPOs) for evaluating donation climates of hospitals in their donation service areas (DSAs). The Rapid Assessment of hospital Procurement barriers in Donation (RAPiD) was developed for OPO hospital development staff to assess the organ donation climate of hospitals. Objective: To implement a national test of the RAPiD to examine its efficacy and usability by OPO hospital development staff. Design: Two-arm randomized design, comparing implementation of RAPiD protocol between qualitatively trained researchers (n = 7) and OPO hospital ...

Successful Treatment of a Hepatitis C-Positive Patient Who Received Kidney Transplant From a Hepatitis C-Positive Donor: A Case Report
Kidney transplantation from hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive donors to HCV-positive recipients has always been controversial regarding the safety and the outcomes. In the posttransplant period, treatment of hepatitis C with interferon-based regimens could lead to serious side effects. A patient with chronic hepatitis C and nephropathy, on dialysis, underwent renal transplantation from an HCV-positive donor and received direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs thereafter. His renal and liver functions, as well as the hepatitis C viral load, were evaluated at predetermined intervals throughout and after his treatment. Patient&rsq...
