Differently synthesized gold nanoparticles respond differently to functionalization with L-amino acids
Publication date: Available online 22 February 2020Source: ParticuologyAuthor(s): Darshana V. Havaldar, Reshma V. Patil, Disha N. Moholkar, Priyanka S. Magdum, Akash P. Vadrale, Kiran D. PawarAbstractThe potential utility of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized via different methods for biomedical applications vary greatly due to inherent differences in their surface properties. In the present study, we investigated the functionalization of AuNPs synthesized by chemical reduction, plant extract, and bacteria-mediated methods with 22 L-amino acids. Nanoparticles produced by bacteria-mediated (B_AuNPs) and plant-mediated (...

Dynamic flowsheet simulation of re-entrainment from particle layers formed inside electrostatic precipitators
This study presents the implementation of a new time-resolving model for electrostatic precipitation utilizing a re-entrainment model. Experimental data support the results of modelling. The model uses a statistical approach based on properties of the particulate layer forming at the precipitator walls. The model is used for the analysis of the redispersion of particles in a laboratory-scale electrostatic precipitator (Sander, Gawor, & Fritsching, 2018). Results show reduced precipitation efficiencies for particles larger than 5 µm as particles have higher kinetic impact energies and lower bounding energy at the layer sur...

Instantaneous mixing characteristics of binary mixtures differing in density in a gas‒solid fluidised bed
Publication date: Available online 20 February 2020Source: ParticuologyAuthor(s): Zhen Wan, Youjun Lu, Hao WangAbstractCharacterisations of instantaneous mixing behaviours in fluidised beds with binary mixtures has many challenges. We studied the instantaneous mixing characteristics of binary mixtures in a 2-D quasi gas‒solid fluidised bed using a capacitance probe method. This method enabled the quantitative assessment of instantaneous mixing behaviours, including mixing index, rate, and time. Three kinds of binary mixtures of similar size but different density were used for the transient and steady fluidisation experim...

Charging states on atmospheric aerosol particles affected by meteorological conditions
Publication date: Available online 3 February 2020Source: ParticuologyAuthor(s): Yuanping He, Zhaolin Gu, Weizhen Lu, Liyuan Zhang, Daizhou Zhang, Tomoaki Okuda, Chuck Wah YuAbstractPrevious studies on haze formation focused mainly on the various chemical components in aerosol particles and their physicochemical effects on particle behaviour (e.g., generation, growth, and agglomeration). This paper describes the measurement of the charging state on atmospheric aerosol particles, which could be affected by meteorological conditions. A series of experiments on particle charging state and meteorological factors was undertaken...

Effect of local non-convexity on the critical shear strength of granular materials determined via the discrete element method
Publication date: Available online 3 February 2020Source: ParticuologyAuthor(s): Zhihong Nie, Shunkai Liu, Wei Hu, Jian GongAbstractMulti-sphere clumps are commonly used to simulate non-spherical particles in discrete element method simulations. It is of interest whether the degree of local non-convexity λ affects the mechanical behaviour of granular materials with the same non-convexity η. A series of discrete-element-method biaxial shear tests are conducted on rough particle packings with η = 0.075 and different λ values (ranging from 0.134 to 0.770). The microscale results show that the contact type change...
