Publication date: June 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care, Volume 9 Author(s): Yoshinori Nakata, Tatsuya Yoshimura, Yuichi Watanabe, Hiroshi Otake, Giichiro Oiso, Tomohiro Sawa The goal of this study is to evaluate Japanese surgeons’ productivity change before and after the revision of fee schedule. We focused on the revision of fee schedule that was implemented on April 1, 2014. We analyzed all the surgical procedures performed from April 1 through September 30 in 2013 and 2014 at Teikyo University Hospital. Non-radial and non-oriented Malmquist model under the constant returns-to-scale assu...

Waiting list management through master surgical schedules: A case study
Publication date: Available online 15 July 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care Author(s): Belinda Spratt, Erhan Kozan In this paper we address the problem of generating master surgical schedules (MSSs) that adhere to staff and equipment restrictions whilst ensuring patients are treated in a timely manner. We simultaneously address the master surgical scheduling problem (MSSP) and the surgical case assignment problem (SCAP). Stochastic surgical durations are considered in order to produce more robust schedules and reduce unexpected overtime. Also incorporated into the model are several constraints regard...

Nurse scheduling with lunch break assignments in operating suites
Publication date: September 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care, Volume 10 Author(s): Gino J. Lim, Arezou Mobasher, Jonathan F. Bard, Amirhossein Najjarbashi Motivated by the need to make frequent changes in operating suites, this paper presents a highly scalable and efficient solution framework for scheduling nurses in operating suites over the day. This framework consists of two core optimization models that are necessary for scheduling OR nurses in the clinic. The first model addresses the multi-objective optimization problem of assigning nurses to upcoming surgery cases based on their specialtie...

Modeling and optimization of resources in multi-emergency department settings with patient transfer
Publication date: Available online 8 June 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care Author(s): Nasim Nezamoddini, Mohammad T. Khasawneh The increasing number of non-emergency patients in emergency departments (EDs) and long wait times caused by their overcrowding are some of the main concerns in health systems research. If an ED reaches an overcrowding state, there may be a need to transfer patients to other hospitals, which may or not belong to the same hospital system. Therefore, this paper investigates the effect of transferring non-emergency patients to other hospitals in multi-hospital settings. The stra...

Managing emergency department crowding through improved triaging and resource allocation
Publication date: Available online 3 June 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care Author(s): Kum Khiong Yang, Sean Shao Wei Lam, Joyce M.W. Low, Marcus Eng Hock Ong Long waiting times in emergency departments (EDs) not only reduce patients’ perceived quality of care, but also increase crowding which can adversely affect patients’ outcomes. Waiting time has been found to affect patients’ outcomes and is closely associated with delays in the provision of ancillary services to ED patients by the diagnostic//treatment laboratories. The focus of this study is to improve the flow of ED patients by testi...

Determining recruiting strategies for an adult stem cell registry
Publication date: Available online 3 May 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care Author(s): John T. Blake, Ken McTaggart, Donna Killeen Throughout the world, regional and national registries exist to find stem cell donors for patients in need. The OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, Canada’s public stem cell registry, was initiated in 1989 and has recruited well over 400,000 registrants. Given recent trends in the selection of adult donors by transplant centres, the registry strives for a composition that is increasingly male, has broad ethnic diversity and predominantly comprised of young donors. In...

Use of a simulation-based decision support tool to improve emergency department throughput
Publication date: Available online 12 April 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care Author(s): Chongsun Oh, April M. Novotny, Pamela L. Carter, Ray K. Ready, Diane D. Campbell, Maureen C. Leckie Simulation based decision support model was used in the redesign of an emergency department (ED) with close to 180,000 visits per year. In order to accommodate high patient volumes at a single site ED, improving patient throughput time is necessary to maintain operational efficiency and to provide high quality patient care. A throughput time goal of arrival to departure under 3 hours for 80% of ED patients w...

Coverage models to determine outreach vaccination center locations in low and middle income countries
Publication date: Available online 12 April 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care Author(s): Jung Lim, Erin Claypool, Bryan A. Norman, Jayant Rajgopal The Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) was established in 1974 to ensure that children all around the world benefit from life-saving vaccines. However, in many low and middle income countries, it is extremely difficult to vaccinate the entire population with the standard regimen of vaccines. One important reason for this is geographically dispersed or nomadic populations. To improve vaccination rates, these countries typically use outreach, where ...

Location of low-cost blood collection and distribution centres in Thailand
We present a novel binary integer programming model for this location-allocation problem based on objectives of improving the supply of blood products while reducing costs of transportation. Computational results are reported, using real life data, that are of practical importance to decision makers. (Source: Operations Research for Health Care)

Reducing uncertainty in demand for blood
This study addresses some of the above challenges faced by blood centers by introducing practical methods for accurate blood demand forecasting, which will allow for lowering of costs, reduction of blood wastage, and conservation of limited resources. Six blood centers were visited in New York State during the years of 2010 and 2011. In all locations, demand-forecasting was completed using the popular Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software; however, this field research study shows the demand for blood is nonstationary and cannot be accurately forecasted using Excel, at least not without writing a macro. Daily demand data was...

A hybrid optimization algorithm for surgeries scheduling
Publication date: Available online 21 January 2016 Source:Operations Research for Health Care Author(s): Paolo Landa, Roberto Aringhieri, Patrick Soriano, Elena Tànfani, Angela Testi This paper deals with the Operating Room (OR) planning problem at an operational planning level. The problem addressed consists in two interrelated sub-problems usually referred to as “advance scheduling” and “allocation scheduling”. In the first sub-problem, the decisions considered are the assignment of a surgery date and an OR block to a set of patients to be operated on over a given planning horizon. The second aims ...
