Psychometric analysis of subjective sedation scales used for critically ill paediatric patients
ConclusionsWe suggest that the scales be systematically and comprehensively tested in terms of development method, reliability, validation, feasibility and correlation with clinical outcome. The Comfort Scale and Comfort Behaviour Scale are useful tools for measuring sedation in paediatric patients. Relevance to clinical practiceNursing staff should choose one subjective sedation scale that is suitable for assessing paediatric patients' depth of sedation. We recommend the Comfort Scale and Comfort Behaviour Scale as optimal choices if the clinical environment permits. (Source: Nursing in Critical Care)

Repeated sleep ‐quality assessment and use of sleep‐promoting interventions in ICU
ABSTRACT To describe sleep quality using repeated subjective assessment and the ongoing use of sleep‐promoting interventions in intensive care. It is well known that the critically ill experience sleep disruption while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. Both the measurement and promotion of sleep is challenging in the complex environment of intensive care unit. Repeated subjective assessment of patients' sleep in the intensive care unit and use of sleep‐promoting interventions has not been widely reported. An observational study was conducted in a 58‐bed adult intensive care unit. Sleep quality was asses...

Barriers to families' regaining control in ICU: Disconnectedness
ConclusionOur findings offer an in‐depth understanding of staff engagement with families and its impact on the families' ability to regain control. Although some themes have been previously identified in the literature in isolation, the interrelationships of the categories within a theoretical framework to represent family resilience in the context of an ICU situated in the Australian health care system are a novel finding. Relevance to Clinical PracticeThe findings can be used to support patient‐ and family‐centred care interventions in the ICU. (Source: Nursing in Critical Care)

Hypocalcaemia ‐induced tetany secondary to total thyroidectomy: a nursing case review
ABSTRACT Presentations to the emergency department with a diagnosis of hypocalcaemia‐induced tetany secondary to total thyroidectomy are rare. A patient presented to the emergency department of a regional Australian hospital with hypocalcaemia‐induced tetany. A case study was employed to reflect on the care provided and identify knowledge practice deficits within this unusual patient presentation. Calcium plays a central role within the nervous system and is vital for both cardiac and muscular contraction. The clinical manifestations of electrolyte disturbances such as hypocalcaemia can be life threatening, and therefo...
