Osteopathic model of the development and prevention of occupational musculoskeletal disorders
CONCLUSIONS: The presented osteopathic model of the development and prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders suggests that a combination of preventive interventions will be more effective than any single preventive intervention.PMID:33635956 | DOI:10.1515/jom-2020-0060 (Source: Journal of the American Osteopathic Association)

Teaching and use of cervical high-velocity, low-amplitude manipulation at colleges of osteopathic medicine
CONCLUSIONS: A majority of COMs provide education in their curricula related to cervical HVLA primarily in the first 2 years of medical education. However, instruction often excludes cervical HVLA to the upper regions of the cervical spine. At COMs where HVLA to the cervical spine is not taught, that decision is because the techniques are thought to be too difficult and the attendant medicolegal risk perceived to be too high. OMM/OPP department chairs expressed confidence in only a small proportion of their graduates having the ability to competently apply HVLA to the cervical spine immediately after completing their predo...

Poor match rates of osteopathic applicants into ACGME dermatology and other competitive specialties
CONCLUSIONS: DO match rates into dermatology and other competitive specialties were poor prior to GME unification and continue to remain low. This situation, when coupled with the closing of many AOA programs and MDs matching into former AOA positions, threatens the future of osteopathic physicians in competitive specialties. Osteopathic recognition is one way to potentially help preserve osteopathic representation and philosophy in the single accreditation system era. Programs should not be hesitant to consider osteopathic applicants for competitive specialties.PMID:33635959 | DOI:10.1515/jom-2020-0202 (Source: Journal of...

A survey on health professionals' understanding of federal protections regarding service dogs in clinical settings
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that increased familiarity and training leads to higher knowledge about service dogs and ADA policy. Health professionals need additional education on ADA service dog regulations and hospital policy in order to minimize risk and ensure patients with service dogs receive optimal care.PMID:33635961 | DOI:10.1515/jom-2020-0280 (Source: Journal of the American Osteopathic Association)

Diversity in osteopathic medical school admissions and the COMPASS program.
Authors: Dady N, Mungroo KA, Young T, Akinsanya J, Forstein D Abstract In the United States, the 37 colleges of osteopathic medicine and 154 schools of allopathic medicine face challenges in recruiting underrepresented minority (URM) applicants, and gaps in racial disparity appear to be widening. In this Special Communication, the authors describe a URM recruitment and support strategy undertaken in 2015 through a special interest group called Creating Osteopathic Minority Physicians who Achieve Scholastic Success (COMPASS) at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine-New York. Straight back syndrome as a clue to diagnosing asymptomatic congenital valvular heart disease and limiting the risk of weightlifting.
Authors: Schiavone WA Abstract Although both are initially asymptomatic, mitral valve prolapse/myxomatous mitral valve disease (MVP/MMVD) and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), with its associated aortic disease, are currently the two most common congenital valvular heart diseases. Severe mitral regurgitation due to rupture of chordae tendineae (CTR) prompts surgery for MVP/MMVD. Surgery for BAV is performed for severe aortic stenosis and/or regurgitation, often with management of root and/or ascending aortic enlargement. There may be an association between straight back syndrome (SBS) and MVP/MMVD, which may be...

Red blood cell distribution width and outcome in trauma patients.
Conclusion: Admission, peak, and Δ RDW were not associated with in-hospital mortality in adult trauma patients with a length of stay (LOS) ≥four days. However, the development of sepsis in trauma patients is closely linked to increased RDW values and in-hospital mortality. Effect of occipitoatlantal decompression on cerebral blood flow dynamics as evaluated by Doppler ultrasonography.
Conclusion: Increases in EDV occurred in major cranial arteries after OAD but not after sham touch, indicating that EDV improves blood flow to the brain. The exact mechanism of this increase is unknown; however, it can be explained by either parasympathetic stimulation through the secretion of vasodilating neurotransmitters or by a decrease in external tissue pressure on ICA and VA, with the resulting flow causing further dilation in the MCA. Osteopathic manipulative treatment and the Spanish flu: a historical literature review.
Conclusion: Conclusions from this study are limited by the historical and descriptive nature of the data gathered, which lacked the rigor of modern-day scientific studies. However, this review could lead to future research inquiries on the effectiveness of these approaches. Osteopathic physicians and osteopaths should embrace their historical osteopathic heritage by continuing the work of our predecessors and combining their hands-on experience and osteopathic principles with modern medical treatment and rigorous scientific standards. Evaluating disease outbreaks with syndromic surveillance using medical student clinical rotation patient encounter logs.
Conclusion: Syndromic surveillance can be timelier than traditional surveillance methods, which require laboratory testing to confirm disease. As a result of this study, we are installing a real-time alert for ILI into CREDO, so rates can be monitored continuously as an indicator of possible future new infectious disease outbreaks.
