Impact of microvascular invasion on clinical outcomes after curative ‐intent resection for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma
ConclusionsRoughly 1 out of 5 patients with resected ICC had MiVI. MiVI was associated with advanced tumor characteristics and a higher risk of tumor recurrence. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Outcome after reconstruction of proximal femoral tumors: A systematic review
Tumor resection followed by reconstruction with a proximal femoral endoprosthesis or an allograft ‐prosthesis composite are the two main alternatives for treatment of proximal femoral malignancies. This review describes the revision rate, implant survival, limb salvage rate, and function. Overall revision rates are high and reasons for failure differ between treatment modalities. Rate and reas ons for amputation are comparable between both methods. Functional outcome was reasonable to good on average for both treatment modalities. Level of evidence: IV, systematic review and meta‐analysis. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Predictors of hospital discharge in cancer patients with pericardial effusion undergoing surgical pericardial drainage
ConclusionAlmost half of the patients never left the hospital. Patients with no chemotherapy within 45 days of procedure, patients with renal failure and higher ECOG status are at greater risk of not getting discharged. PHI remains a serious condition with high mortality. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Comparing Kadish, TNM, and the modified Dulguerov staging systems for esthesioneuroblastoma
ConclusionAlthough primary surgical management and positive margins can be predicted by certain patient and tumor factors, clinical staging systems for ENB poorly predict prognosis over a 10 ‐year horizon. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Phase II trial of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with intraperitoneal paclitaxel, S ‐1, and intravenous cisplatin and paclitaxel for stage IIIA or IIIB gastric cancer
ConclusionsNeoadjuvant chemotherapy including intraperitoneal paclitaxel followed by sequential intravenous paclitaxel and cisplatin with S ‐1 for resectable advanced gastric cancer is feasible and effective. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Preoperative monocyte ‐to‐lymphocyte ratio predicts recurrence in gastrointestinal stromal tumors
ConclusionMLR, NLR, and PLR are independent prognostic factors for DFS in GISTs. We first demonstrated the role of MLR as a predictor of recurrence in GIST. Its inclusion into clinical management may improve the recurrence estimation. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Localized synovial sarcoma of the foot or ankle: A series of 32 Cooperative Weichteilsarkom Study Group patients
ConclusionSurvival expectancies for patients with localized synovial sarcomas of the foot/ankle compare favorably to that of those with other affected sites.DiscussionFurther studies are needed to set the limits of minimally required aggressiveness of local therapies. Primary tumor location in stage III colon cancer has prognostic impact on subsequent liver metastasis
ConclusionsThe primary tumor location can serve as a prognostic factor for treatment outcomes either in primary stage III colon cancer or subsequent liver metastasis. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

The interaction between BRAF mutation and microsatellite instability (MSI) status in determining survival outcomes after adjuvant 5FU based chemotherapy in stage III colon cancer
ConclusionsIn this historical cohort, MSI testing is predictive of response to adjuvant chemotherapy in stage III colon cancer, but only when results are interpreted in combination withBRAF. This supports the role of routine testing for these biomarkers. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Management of locoregional recurrence after radical resection of a primary nonmetastatic retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcoma: The Gustave Roussy experience
ConclusionsThe management of LR in RPS is complex. An initial surveillance may not alter survival in asymptomatic low ‐grade and slow‐growing LR. An LR decision scheme is proposed. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Pre ‐operative predictors of early recurrence/mortality including the role of inflammatory indices in patients undergoing partial hepatectomy for spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma
ConclusionsTumor size  >  10 cm, free tumor rupture, and an AFP >  200 ng/mL were useful predictors in avoiding “futile surgery” in patients with srHCC undergoing a partial hepatectomy. Preoperative inflammatory markers appear to be less useful as predictors of early recurrence/mortality in this cohort of patients. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

The everlasting issue of prolonged air leaks after lobectomy for non ‐small cell lung cancer: A data‐driven prevention planning model in the era of minimally invasive approaches
ConclusionsThe risk score incorporates either general or more specific variables, providing a risk stratification that could be readily applied intra ‐ and postoperatively. Henceforth, specific technical and management measures could be properly allocated to curb PAL. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)
