The community of inquiry model by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer distinguished the area of social presence as an important component of online learning, and this study sought to understand how faculty perceive and create social presence in their online classroom. By employing a grounded theory approach, a substantive theory was developed to explain the way in which faculty create and maintain an online course climate. The sample consisted of 10 nursing faculty teaching various master’s in nursing courses. T...

The Holistic Worldview in Action: Evolution of Holistic Nurses Certification Programs
This article describes four major changes in the work of AHNCC since 2004: a detection of an evolution in the domain of holistic nursing through review of the literature; clarification and specification of levels of practice by educational level; development of the nurse coach role in nursing, designed within the precepts of holistic nursing; and AHNCC’s response to the social paradigm shift for health care, and nursing’s advanced practice registered nurse consensus model. The Journey of Discovering Compassionate Listening
This article presents the concept of "compassionate listening" in critical life moments to gain insight into the process of listening with compassion. This insight evolved through a process of layered reflection using a series of texts, particularly stories that captured critical moments in working with people who were facing crisis situations or who were dying. Writing and reflecting on these stories enabled me to identify how I engaged with patients and their loved ones as a palliative care nurse specialist. I was able to explore how compassionate listening could be used to ascertain their needs, particularly when they w...

Place Knowing of Persons and Populations: Restoring the Place Work of Nursing
Place emerges when space acquires definition in social constructions of meaning as landscape-languages, which reflect assumptions about physical and social realities. The place work of nursing, which resonated throughout Nightingale’s work and the profession’s evolution, focuses on human health and healing in the historical transitions and landscape-languages of populations. However, evidence-based practice dominated by empirical knowing inadequately addresses complex health and illness dynamics between place and populations. Translating evidence to the life course experiences of individuals and populations req...
