An esthetic evaluation of unilateral canine substitution for a missing maxillary lateral incisor
ConclusionsDarker canine color and a pronounced tip morphology of a substituted canine are rated as the most unattractive by dental professionals and laypeople. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEThe present study showed that the canine color and crown tip morphology are important parameters when considering unilateral canine substitution, both for professionals and laypeople. There is a general preference in favor of canines with a light color and a reduced incisal tip. (Source: Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry)

Changes of tooth color in middle and old age: A longitudinal study over a decade
ConclusionsFor both quinquagenarians and septuagenarians, clinically relevant changes in tooth color were observed after a decade; these could affect the long‐term success of prosthetic restorations in terms of a satisfactory color match between natural teeth and dental prostheses. In contrast with the findings of cross‐sectional studies, the changes were partially age‐group‐specific. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCETooth color can change over a decade. When fixed dental prostheses are planned, one should consider that changes of tooth color could lead to mismatch between a restoration and adjacent teeth during the period in ...

Whitening ‐dependent changes of fluorescence of extracted human teeth
ConclusionsWithin the limitations of this study, whitening provoked statistically significant changes in fluorescence of the intact teeth in vitro. Clinical significanceThe appearance of human teeth and dental materials and their changes upon aging and exposure to different agents (staining, whitening) is a topic of great relevance to esthetic dentistry. While some appearance parameters, such as color, translucency, and gloss, have been thoroughly studied, fluorescence and its influence on overall tooth appearance is still not well understood, yet it has influenced the development of fluorescence emitting restorative mater...

Prevalence of tooth forms and their gender correlation
ConclusionsNo correspondence exists between tooth shapes and patient genders. Pre‐standardized pure tooth forms appeared less than hybrid ones, while the most frequently found in the population studied were TO, SOS, and OR forms, disregarding genders. Clinical significanceEsthetic perception is an increasingly important criterion critical to satisfy patients. The correlation of reported tooth shapes with specific genders was not reliably observed in natural smiles. Tooth shapes should be selected according to the wishes of the patient rather than by previously believed gender specific tooth shapes. Pure basic tooth forms...

CAD/CAM ceramic fragments in anterior teeth: A clinical report
ConclusionsIt was observed that with this kind of restoration optimum esthetic results might be achieved when treating anterior fractured teeth. Clinical significanceCeramic fragments using CAD/CAM systems are a viable clinical alternative to composites for the reconstruction of fractured teeth. Function and esthetics can be restored with the use of this treatment quickly and efficiently. (Source: Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry)

Injectable technique for direct provisional restoration
ConclusionThis technique will help the clinicians to enhance the quality of the provisional restorations, to prevent entrapment of bubbles, improve marginal precision and prevent seating error. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEThis study described a novel technique for constructing a direct provisional restoration by injecting bis‐acryl temporary resin into a matrix that is already seated over the prepared tooth. Treatment of multiple maxillary adjacent class I and II gingival recessions with modified coronally advanced tunnel and a new xenogeneic acellular dermal matrix
ConclusionWithin their limits, the present results indicate that treatment of Miller Class I and II multiple gingival recessions using PADM in conjunction with the MCAT could be successfully used as an alternative to connective tissue grafts, with the advantage of avoiding the discomfort and morbidity of connective tissue harvesting. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEThe modified coronally advanced tunnel technique using the new porcine acellular dermal matrix represents a clinically and esthetically satisfactory treatment of multiple Miller Class 1 and 2 recession defects. The effect of milling and postmilling procedures on the surface roughness of CAD/CAM materials
ConclusionsThe polishing methods were able to reduce roughness to baseline values, except for lithium‐based ceramics. Glaze reduced significantly the roughness of lithium‐based ceramics without a difference from the baseline. SEM and AFM images revealed that glazed surfaces are smoother than polished surfaces. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEAll hard‐milling CAD/CAM materials, that is, fully sintered, should be only hand polished. The glaze step can be suppressed resulting in time saving. However, the glaze step in soft‐milling lithium disilicate is imperative. (Source: Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry)

Effect of access design on intracoronal bleaching of endodontically treated teeth: An ex vivo study
ConclusionsIn general, teeth accessed with CEC or TEC designs showed statistically similar bleaching when using 35% carbamide peroxide. However, lightness values were only reestablished with bleaching through a TEC access design. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEDespite the current trend to conserve tooth structure when performing endodontic access cavities, the use of conservative access designs for bleaching discolored maxillary central incisors affected the acceptability threshold when compared with a traditional access design. These smaller accesses might not be an alternative treatment option when internal bleaching in the esthet...

Endodontic treatment of dens evaginatus by performing a splint guided access cavity
ConclusionsCBCT is an effective method for obtaining internal anatomical information of teeth with anatomical malformations. The osseointegrated implant planning software is an effective method for planning root canal treatment and designing stereolithograped splits (for performing minimally invasive access cavities). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEStereolithographed splints allow performing a guided and conservative access cavity of teeth affected by dental malformations whereas digital technology allows us to esthetically reconstruct a tooth in a single session.
