Effectiveness of a Voluntary Nutrition Education Workshop in a State Prison
This study evaluated a pilot intervention to improve nutrition in prisoners. Residents of a correctional substance abuse program (SAP) completed a health risk appraisal (HRA) upon entering the SAP and at completion. Nineteen participants in a pilot nutrition workshop were matched with 37 nonparticipant controls. Analysis of changes in HRA responses relating to nutrition, general health, and social ties found that a significantly greater proportion of participants than controls reported improved nutrition practices (23.5% vs. 3.2%, p = .047). Participants were 4 times more likely to report improved general health than contr...

Misconceptions About Traumatic Brain Injury Among Correctional Health Care Professionals
This study explored the prevalence of misconceptions of traumatic brain injury (TBI) among a sample of correctional health care professionals. Prior research has identified a high prevalence of TBI among criminal offenders, and misconceptions about TBI exist among laypersons and nonexpert professionals. Participants (N = 155) completed a 25-item survey about the sequelae of TBI. Results were compared with previous studies. This sample performed significantly better than laypersons and commensurable to other nonexpert professionals. Misconceptions were higher on items related to loss of consciousness, memory, and recovery. ...

Nurse Retention in a Correctional Facility: A Study of the Relationship Between the Nurses' Perceived Barriers and Benefits
Retention of nursing staff is more complex in a correctional facility. After a period of 3 years, only 20% of the staff remained employed at this study facility. Without retention of qualified correctional nurses, there are decreases in access to care, gaps in continuity of care, and less time for mentorship. Trained correctional nurses improve patient and staff safety, provide more education, and are more team-oriented. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers and benefits to nursing staff satisfaction with their job and the likelihood that they will continue to work in correctional settings. Practice and patien...

Treatment Impact of an Integrated Sex Offender Program as Measured by J-SOAP-II
This study examined the effectiveness of an integrated sex offender program on a sample of 309 adjudicated male sex offenders in a juvenile correctional facility using the dynamic scale score of the Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol II (J-SOAP-II). The youth participated in one of the three treatment groups characterized by length of treatment and risk of recidivism: low risk (0 to 9 months), moderate risk (9 to 23 months), and high risk (23 to 56 months). A significant decrease in the dynamic scale scores of the J-SOAP-II was found only for the moderate treatment group (9 to 23 months). (Source: Journal of Correctional Health Care)

Dating Violence, Psychological Distress, and Attempted Suicide Among Female Adolescents in the Juvenile Justice System
This study examined the independent association between dating violence and poor mental health (psychological distress and attempted suicide) among 305 female adolescents involved with the juvenile justice system in Nevada. Overall, 28% of the sample met the criteria for clinically significant psychological distress and 18% had attempted suicide with intent to die. After controlling for well-established risk factors such as sexual orientation, childhood abuse, and substance abuse, dating violence remained independently associated with psychological distress and attempted suicide. These findings suggest that mental health p...

Suicide Prevention in Administrative Segregation Units: What Is Missing?
Suicide remains a problem in prison administrative segregation units. Preventing suicide requires more than following policies and procedures and making structural changes to these units. The primary reason for placement in administrative segregation units is for an alleged rule violation, which in some cases could also be a crime. Prisoners could also be placed there for protection from other prisoners or pending an investigation of their allegations of staff misconduct. From the moment a prisoner is handcuffed for placement in administrative segregation, clinical and custody staff must work together in a manner that comm...
