In Praise of a Doctor Who Welcomes the Newborn Infant Person
This article recalls how Dr. Berry Brazelton, in the past 50 years, has transformed pediatrics and childcare and supported parents' understanding of their young children. Berry's work as a pediatrician and basic research in the psychobiology of childbirth and infant communication and care have proved to be richly complementary. Brazelton and the author were fortunate to meet in the context of the wide exploration of human nature and adaptations of human intelligence for cooperative life encouraged by Jerome Bruner's vision of how cultural awareness of meaning may be generated in affectionate relations from infancy. This op...

Grandchild of the NBAS: The NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS)
A review of the research on the NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) is presented. The NNNS has good psychometric properties and reliability. Standardized norms are available for it. It was found to be sensitive to a wide variety of medical, exposure, and demographic variables and has robust predictive validity. It will be useful for nurses for detecting neurobehavioral problems and management of the young infant. (Source: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing)

Newborn Behavior, Parent–Infant Interaction, and Developmental Change Processes: Research Roots of Developmental, Relational, and Systems‐Theory‐Based Practice
The discovery of individual and cross‐cultural differences among newborns, and their effects on caregiver behaviors, underpins a systems theory of human development and a resulting paradigm shift. This theory accommodates both epigenetics—mediating genes and environment within the individual, and culture—a dynamic, emergent phenomenon transmitting contextually adaptive child‐rearing beliefs and practices. Within human systems, children and parents' development is also propelled by mutual adaptation occurring through the microprocesses of early interactions and through normative periods of disorganization and reorga...

The Competent Newborn and the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale: T. Berry Brazelton's Legacy
This article celebrates Berry Brazelton's extraordinary contribution to our understanding of child development by focusing on two representative themes. The first is that newborns are competent and organized from the very beginning and that the neonate is in a dynamic rather than passive relationship with the environment. The second is the recognition that the newborn period is an extremely sensitive stage in the transition to parenthood and as such may be the intervention “touchpoint” par excellence for professionals who are dedicated to giving children and families the best possible start in life.
