Improving Cancer Services and Survival in New Zealand
Publication date: Available online 9 January 2020Source: Journal of Cancer PolicyAuthor(s): Christopher GCA Jackson, Ian Bissett, Scott Macfarlane, Shaun CostelloAbstractA growing gap in cancer survival is emerging between New Zealand and comparator countries such as Australia and Canada. While survival rates are impacted by early detection, receipt of high quality and timely anti-cancer treatment is clearly key. Several clinical, policy, and structural factors will influence the likelihood of receipt of optimal care. These include geographic access to treatment, waiting times, access to specialized care, and systems perfo...

Clinical research in Europe: Who do we do all that for?
We report herein a specific case illustrating such challenges. We question how far legal constraints overshoot their initial objectives, leading to opposite effects for which they were set up. In an era where independent evaluation of cancer treatments is becoming so critical due to complexity, duplication and costs, comprehensive and pragmatic reform of our frameworks appears critical. Volume of Systemic Cancer Therapy Delivery and Outcomes of Patients with Solid Tumors: A Systematic Review and Methodologic Evaluation of the Literature
ConclusionThe available evidence suggests that volume of systemic therapy provision for solid tumors may be associated with improved survival. However, each study identified in this review contains such considerable methodologic shortcomings and/or unresolved confounding that estimation of an unbiased treatment effect is not possible. High quality research is needed prior to implementation of volume-based regionalization policies for systemic therapy. (Source: Journal of Cancer Policy)

Integration of Longitudinal Psychoeducation Programmes during the Phases of Diagnosis, Management and Survivorship of Breast Cancer Patients: a narrative review
Publication date: Available online 23 December 2019Source: Journal of Cancer PolicyAuthor(s): Athena Michaelides, Constantina ConstantinouAbstractBreast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed worldwide and the leading cause of cancer death in women. In the past years, efforts have been made to develop psychoeducation programmes targeting the prevention of breast cancer via educating the general public. These programmes placed emphasis on risk reducing behaviours and on promoting Breast Self-Examination and screening via mammography, to aid in the early identification of pathological findings. In parallel, effort...

Financial barriers related to breast cancer screening and treatment: A cross-sectional survey of women in Kenya
ConclusionFor women both with and without diagnosed breast cancer, cost was a major concern in seeking medical services. Is the number of cancer drug approvals a surrogate for regulatory success?
In this study, we assess the trend in number and characteristics of 115 cancer drugs approved by the FDA over the last decade and evaluate whether they have improved patient survival. We find that the number of cancer drug approvals have steadily increased over the years from 5 in 2009 to 33 in 2018. Accelerated approvals started to rise since 2014 and peaked in 2017. The percentage of drugs that improved overall survival has steadily declined and reached its lowest(7%) in 2017. Approval of better drugs that improve patient outcomes maybe more or at least equally important aspect for regulatory focus compared to approval o...

The Tip of the Iceberg? Budget Restrictions and Patient Perspectives on Cancer Drug Costs: An international survey in 29 hospitals and 56 patient organizations
ConclusionOur findings revealed the lack of systematic approach towards purchasing agreements, and a limited use of potentially powerful mechanisms such as joint negotiations. Furthermore, a large majority of patient representatives (79%) and providers (66%) indicated that the drug cost issue is likely to influence treatments decisions. Access issues and coverage delays seem to be present in all countries regardless of level of GDP. (Source: Journal of Cancer Policy)
