Evaluation of antihypercholesterolemic effect using Memecylon edule Roxb. ethanolic extract in cholesterol-induced Swiss albino mice
Conclusion The M. edule extract contains a different class of secondary metabolites, which reduces the hypercholesterolemic condition in the experimental animal model. The results explored the M. edule extract as a potent drug for hypercholesterolemic condition. (Source: Journal of Acute Medicine)

Black esophagus
Publication date: Available online 14 November 2015 Source:Journal of Acute Medicine Author(s): Chiara Casarsa, Filippo Mearelli, Michela Zanetti, Gianni Biolo Black esophagus is an uncommon clinical entity and its pathogenesis remains unknown. Clinical presentation is usually characterized by the combination of hematemesis and circumferential darkness of the mucosa in the distal esophagus. This case illustrates an atypical presentation of the disease. Despite its rarity, black esophagus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding, especially in patients with pred...

Severe accidental colchicine poisoning by the autumn crocus: A case of successful treatment
Conclusion: Colchicine intoxication may lead to a sudden and extreme critical course. Therefore, as there is no means to predict prognosis from initial severity of symptoms at onset, we suggest that all patients suspected of colchicine intoxication should be managed in hospital with continuous vital sign monitoring and frequent laboratory testing for at least a few days after ingestion. A rare but serious case of toluene-induced sudden sniffing death
We present the case of a 38-year-old female who sustained out-of-hospital cardiac arrest temporally related to toluene sniffing. Resuscitation of sudden sniffing death is seldom successful in the previous published reports. Our patient initially survived after aggressive resuscitation. Toluene abuse is associated with major toxicities including severe metabolic acidosis with lactate accumulation, CNS depression, ventricular arrhythmias, rhabdomyolysis, and liver toxicity. A possible mechanism of sudden sniffing death related to toluene abuse is ventricular arrhythmias, yet the true mechanism is still unknown. Severe metabo...

Iatrogenic hypermagnesemia following Epsom salt enema
Publication date: Available online 29 August 2015 Source:Journal of Acute Medicine Author(s): Michael R. Prystajecky, Sarah Parent, Habib ur Rehman Constipation is a common problem in the older population. Among other treatment modalities, Epsom salt enema has been used in emergency rooms. Since Epsom salts are 100% magnesium sulfate and excreted wholly through the kidneys, hypermagnesemia may result from their use, particularly in patients with impaired renal function. A case of fatal iatrogenic hypermagnesemia resulting from the administration of an Epsom salt enema is presented here. We suggest that magnesium-...

Emphysematous pancreatitis with profound shock: A case report
Publication date: Available online 19 June 2015 Source:Journal of Acute Medicine Author(s): Yi-Ching Wu , Che-Cheng Su , Yu-Hang Yeh , Yu-Ming Bai , Tzu-Yao Hung Emphysematous pancreatitis is a rare variant of necrotizing pancreatitis and can be detected easily on computed tomography (CT). In stable patients, surgical intervention is likely to be delayed until conservative management has been attempted and has failed. Rapidly deteriorating manifestations and gas bubbles in and around the pancreas on CT are findings suggestive of infected pancreatic necrosis, and early necrosectomy may be indicated in such cases. W...
