Reflective and collaborative skills enhances Ambulance nurses’ competence – A study based on qualitative analysis of professional experiences
The Swedish ambulance health care services are changing and developing and subsequently, so is the role of the ambulance nurse. Ambulance nurses have had a significant role in the development of practice and could be considered vital to the current advancement in the field. Since 2005 every Swedish ambulance has been manned by at least one registered nurse, often with a specialist degree and, nurses are represented on all organizational levels where they have had great influence on development. This short period of history of ambulance nurses in ambulance health care and rapid development of the area has led to uncertainti...

Reasons for interrupting colleagues during emergency department work – A qualitative study
Work in an emergency department (ED) is characterized by unpredictability in emergency patient attendance, presentation of symptoms and level of acuity. Hence, conditions in an ED may change rapidly and unpredictably, calling for the reprioritization of actions. The ED context consists of multiple teams of clinicians working with different flow processes e.g., triage, surgical patients and orthopedic patients. Further, several care processes for individual patients with different levels of priority occur simultaneously within each flow process and not all team members are concurrently involved in the same care procedures. ...

The first single responders in Sweden – Evaluation of a pre-hospital single staffed unit
One major challenge for pre-hospital care is to adapt ambulance resources to the actual needs of the community. In order to improve pre-hospital service in rural areas far from ambulance services, a single responder (SR) system has been implemented in several countries. Family needs of critically ill patients in the emergency department
Comprehensive critical care in the emergency department (ED) that embraces a patient- and family-centered approach —that is, one which recognizes the needs of both patients and their families—is central to effective care delivery but is difficult to achieve. Prompt assessment of family needs and actions to meet these needs not only reduces family members’ stress and anxiety (Carlson et al., 2015; Jabre et al., 2014), but also enhances patient recovery and satisfaction with care (Browning and Warren, 2006). Continuity matters: Examining the ‘information gap’ in transfer from Residential Aged Care, ambulance to emergency triage in southern Tasmania
Individuals from Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) frequently live with complex multisystem disease including cognitive impairment (Dwyer et al., 2014; Arendts et al., 2010; Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2013). They are often transferred to hospital for a variety reasons (Ingarfield et al., 2009; Arendts et al., 2010) via ambulance (Dwyer et al., 2014; Arendts et al., 2010) unaccompanied by anyone who knows them well. Multidisciplinary services are expected to share complex health histories efficiently and accurately during transfer (Coleman, 2003; Iedema and Merrick, 2008). Spontaneous, resolving S1Q3T3 in pulmonary embolism: A case report and literature review on prognostic value of electrocardiography score for pulmonary embolism
Pulmonary embolism (PE) refers to the occlusion of pulmonary vasculature which alters the intrapulmonary blood flow (Kline, 2011). The subsequent impairment of gas exchange can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Roughly 200,000 new cases of venous thromboembolism are diagnosed each year with an approximately six percent 30-day fatality rate from PE (Freedman and Loscalzo, 2012). Prompt diagnosis and effective disposition and treatment are crucial in reducing the critical sequelae. As more advanced and accurate modalities have been developed, electrocardiography (ECG) has been deemed to have less diagnostic value....
