Alternative to vein grafts for arterial repair in avulsion amputations of thumb: Case series
Chaitanya Dodakundi, Nebojsa Jovanovic, Hamed Badawi, Khalid AlawadiIndian Journal of Orthopaedics 2019 53(5):613-615 The first reimplantation of a complete thumb amputation using microvascular anastomosis in a human was successfully conducted by Komatsu in 1968. Avulsion amputations of the thumb at the level of metacarpophalangeal joints pose a tedious task for direct arterial repair, even with adequate bone shortening. Owing to the short length of princeps pollicis from the deep arch, tight working space in the first web under microscope, and the associated intimal injuries, we advise transposing the radial indices arte...

Tendon transfer for persistent radial nerve palsy using single-split fcu technique and re-routing of extensor pollicis longus: a prospective study of 25 cases
Conclusion: Single transfer using split FCU can be a preferred alternative in patients of low radial nerve palsy, it can be considered for high radial nerve patients in whom multiple donors are absent due to the nature of injury, for example, brachial plexus injury. Does hyaluronan improve pain or function following arthroscopic subacromial decompression (ASD) surgery of shoulder ? Results of a level 1 RCT
Conclusion: While both groups showed improved pain and function scores after ASAD, no significant difference was seen between groups receiving placebo or hyaluronan. The intervention is safe but, in this study, has not been shown to improve postoperative pain or function over ASAD alone. Level of evidence: I. (Source: Indian Journal of Orthopaedics)

The upsurge in research and publication on articular cartilage repair in the last 10 years
This study aims to study the publication trends in articular cartilage repair (ACR) techniques, over the last 10 years. A literature search was performed on the PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases. We used suitable keywords and Boolean operators (articular cartilage injury AND “marrow stimulation OR microfracture (MFx),” “osteochondral autograft,” “osteochondral allograft” and “autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI),” “scaffold”), on January 1, 2019. Trends in publication on these to...

Refractory tietze & #39;s syndrome occurring after lumbar spine surgery in prone position
Viswanadha Arun Kumar, J Naresh BabuIndian Journal of Orthopaedics 2019 53(4):574-577Positional complications in spine surgery are not uncommon. Commonly encountered complications include ocular and aural, other than musculoskeletal injuries. However, development of Tietze's syndrome due to malpositioning has not been reported till date. A 40-year-old male patient presented with postlaminectomy syndrome, for which posterior pedicle screw fixation and fusion was performed. Postoperatively, patient complained of new-onset pain associated with redness and swelling at parasternal region. After thorough radiological ...

Radiomorphological manifestations of femoral and tibial cortical bones at different stages of limb lengthening
Conclusion: Cortical bone of the femur and tibia in patients with limb length discrepancy and bone deformity of various etiologies showed various preoperative local densities of external, internal, and osteon layers. The cortical bone demonstrated heterogenic structures with resorption areas of various magnitude and density, with minimal values at the boundary with regenerate bone during distraction and fixation with frame on and at short-term followup. Complete organotypical restructuring of the bone was shown to occur at a 1-to-3-year followup depending on the etiology of the disease and amount of lengthening performed. ...

Results of rodding and impact on ambulation and refracture in osteogenesis imperfecta: Study of 21 children
Conclusions: Intramedullary rodding treatment for recurrent fractures in children with OI improves their mobility potential. It also and prevents repeated cast application, disuse wasting, and osteopenia which can lead to deterioration in the quality of the long bones. (Source: Indian Journal of Orthopaedics)
