A retrospective comparison of the management of recalcitrant lateral elbow tendinosis: platelet-rich plasma injections versus surgery
Conclusions Similar outcomes in pain improvement and return to work may be achievable with either PRP injections or surgery in recalcitrant lateral elbow tendinosis. PRP injections may be a reasonable alternative for patients apprehensive to proceed with surgery or poor surgical candidates. (Source: Hand)

Immediate and durable clinical improvement in the non-operated hand after contralateral surgery for patients with bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Abstract Background Little is known about clinical improvement in the non-operated hand after unilateral surgery for patients who present with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In this prospective study of patients with bilateral CTS, we evaluated the clinical effects on the non-operated hand following unilateral contralateral carpal tunnel surgical release. Material and Methods During a consecutive period of 22 months, 69 patients with bilateral CTS underwent unilateral open carpa...

Risk factors for complications of open trigger finger release
Conclusions Open trigger finger release is generally a low-risk procedure, although there is potential for complications, some requiring reoperation. Male gender, sedation, and general anesthesia may be associated with greater risk. Surgeons should be careful to thoroughly discuss the risk of both major and minor complications when counseling patients. (Source: Hand)

Epidemiologic dynamics contributing to pediatric wrist fractures in the United States
Conclusions It is essential to develop injury prevention and safety strategies as well as identify individual risk factors for fracture, including activity, sex, and key age transitions. Surveillance is imperative to advance our understanding of these fractures, and in the future may facilitate development of research prediction tools to anticipate or prevent injury. (Source: Hand)

National trends in ambulatory surgery for upper extremity fractures: a 10-year analysis of the US National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery
Conclusion The volume of ambulatory surgery for upper extremity fractures has increased dramatically from 1996 to 2006. Operative treatment of upper extremity fractures has increased markedly. Our analysis provides valuable information for providers and policy-makers for allocating the appropriate resources to help sustain this volume. (Source: Hand)

Patient education for carpal tunnel syndrome: analysis of readability
Conclusions Online patient resources for carpal tunnel surgery uniformly exceed the recommended reading level. These are too difficult to be understood by a large portion of American adults. A better understanding of readability may be useful in tailoring more appropriate resources for average patient literacy. (Source: Hand)

Outcome following distally locked volar plating for distal radius fractures with metadiaphyseal involvement
Conclusion Distally locked long volar plating for metadiaphyseal distal radius fractures is a safe and effective treatment option for these complex fracture patterns allowing anatomic restoration of the radial shaft and distal radius. (Source: Hand)

Reconstruction of scaphoid non-union and total scaphoid avascular necrosis in a pediatric patient: a case report
Conclusions Technical considerations for harvest of the medial femoral condyle bone graft in the skeletally immature patient are discussed. (Source: Hand)

Internet self-diagnosis in hand surgery
Conclusions The majority of online diagnoses for hand and upper extremity conditions do not correspond with the diagnosis of the treating hand surgeon. Psychological factors do not influence the correspondence of online diagnosis with the hand surgeon’s diagnosis. Level of Evidence: Prognostic, level II (Source: Hand)

Rheumatoid hand surgery: is there a decline? A 22-year population-based study
Conclusions There has been a decline in the number of hand surgery procedures being performed on patients with RA during our 22-year population-based study. It indicates that medical treatments and strategies have been successful at preventing disease progression. (Source: Hand)

Clinical outcomes following collagenase injections compared to fasciectomy in the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture
Conclusions Fasciectomy yields a greater mean magnitude of correction for digital contractures at the latest follow-up when compared to collagenase. Both treatments were more effective for treatment of MP joint contracture compared to PIP joint contracture. Level of Evidence Level III, therapeutic. (Source: Hand)

Evaluating adhesion reduction efficacy of type I/III collagen membrane and collagen-GAG resorbable matrix in primary flexor tendon repair in a chicken model
Conclusion The ideal method of reducing clinically significant tendon adhesions after injury remains elusive. Both materials in this study demonstrate promise in reducing tendon adhesions after flexor tendon repair without impeding tendon healing in this model. (Source: Hand)

Limited intercarpal fusion as a salvage procedure for advanced Kienbock disease
Conclusions Despite a mean flexion-extension arc that is reduced from that of a normal individual, the postoperative range of motion following a midcarpal arthrodesis was not significantly different than that reported in a recent systematic review of proximal row carpectomy (73.5° compared with 53°, respectively) (P = 0.05). Additionally, given the significant postoperative reduction in associated pain symptoms at the time of follow-up, scaphocapitate arthrodesis should be considered as a treatment option for wrist salvage in the patient with advanced Kienbock’s disease. Medically managed gout precipitating acute carpal tunnel syndrome
Conclusions Atraumatic ACTS secondary to gout is rare and has never been reported in a patient already being managed with uric acid lowering agents. Such a presentation requires rapid surgical exploration with release of the carpal tunnel, debridement of all gouty tissue, and increasingly aggressive adjuvant medical therapy. (Source: Hand)
