Characteristics and Health Benefits of Phytochemicals.
Authors: Leitzmann C Abstract In food science the term 'phytochemicals' includes a variety of plant ingredients with different structures that are capable of health-promoting effects. Phytonutrients are natural substances but are not called nutrients in the traditional sense, since they are synthesized by plants neither in energy metabolism nor in anabolic or catabolic metabolism, but only in specific cell types. They differ from primary plant compounds in that they are not essential to the plant. Phytonutrients perform important tasks in the secondary metabolism of plants as repellents to pests and sunlig...

Impact of Soy Foods on the Development of Breast Cancer and the Prognosis of Breast Cancer Patients.
Authors: Messina M Abstract The relationship between soy food intake and breast cancer has been rigorously investigated for more than 25 years. The identification of isoflavones as possible chemopreventive agents helped fuel this line of investigation. These diphenolic compounds, which are found in uniquely-rich amounts in soy beans, possess both estrogen-dependent and -independent properties that potentially inhibit the development of breast cancer. Observational studies show that among Asian women higher soy consumption is associated with an approximate 30% reduction in risk of developing breast cancer. ...

Personality Profiles, Values and Empathy: Differences between Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarians and Vegans.
DISCUSSION: This survey suggests that vegans have more open and compatible personality traits, are more universalistic, empathic, and ethically oriented, and have a slightly higher quality of life when compared to vegetarians. Given the small absolute size of these differences, further research is needed to evaluate whether these group differences are relevant in everyday life and can be confirmed in other populations.

Injections of Local Anesthetics into the Pharyngeal Region Reduce Trapezius Muscle Tenderness.
CONCLUSIONS: Pharyngeal irritation may induce and maintain therapy-resistant cervical pain in patients with chronic pharyngeal disease. These patients could benefit from remote TLA/NT injections in the pharyngeal region. PMID: 27177452 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Forschende Komplementarmedizin)

Prevalence of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use in the General Population in the Czech Republic.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of CAM use in the Czech Republic is high, especially among people who apply CAM for self-treatment prior to seeing a doctor. Half of the study population combined CAM with conventional medical treatment, which may result in potential harm to the patient. Healthcare providers as well as the public should be educated about effective and safe use of CAM. PMID: 26978161 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Forschende Komplementarmedizin)

Acupoint Application for Asthma Therapy in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Acupoint application may be a valid complementary and alternative therapy for asthma in adults. It contributes especially to improving pulmonary function and reducing the levels of interleukin and immunoglobulin E. However, more studies with longer follow-ups are warranted to confirm the current findings. PMID: 26978427 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Forschende Komplementarmedizin)
