Exploring Types of Family Environments in Youth with Eating Disorders
Abstract While many studies have explored the relationship between different eating disorder diagnoses and the familial social environment, current evidence does not support associations between distinct family interaction patterns (e.g. high enmeshment) and particular diagnoses (e.g. anorexia nervosa). The current study seeks to move beyond the current literature to explore whether empirically derived subtypes of family environment are associated with clinical features within a transdiagnostic sample of youth seeking treatment for eating disorders (n = 123). Latent class modelling of the Family Environment Scale ident...

Risk of Urolithiasis in Anorexia Nervosa: A Population ‐Based Cohort Study Using the Health Improvement Network
Abstract This population‐based retrospective cohort study sought to determine if anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with a higher risk of urolithiasis. Nine thousand three hundred two females with AN were compared to 92 959 randomly selected age‐matched and practice‐matched females. Cox regression was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for urolithiasis and evaluate effect modification by age. Twenty‐three participants with AN (0.25%) developed urolithiasis compared with 154 unexposed participants (0.17%) over a median of 4 years of observation. The risk of urolithiasis varied significantly with age (interac...

Development and Validation of a Decision Tool for Early Identification of Adult Patients with Severe and Complex Eating Disorder Psychopathology in Need of Highly Specialized Care
Summary Patients with complex and severe eating disorders often receive a number of ineffective or/and insufficient treatments. Direct referral of these patients to highly specialized tertiary treatment facilities in an earlier stage of the disorder is likely to be more (cost)‐effective. The aim of the study was to develop a decision tool that aids clinicians in early identification of these patients. After identification of criteria that were indicative of severity and complexity of eating disorder psychopathology by means of a systematic review of literature and consultation of a focus group, a Delphi method was applie...

Self ‐Disgust within Eating Disordered Groups: Associations with Anxiety, Disgust Sensitivity and Sensory Processing
This study aimed to assess the relationship between self‐disgust and sensory processing within eating psychopathology. Five hundred and ninety‐one women with a self‐reported diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or who had no previous history of an eating disorder completed a battery of online questionnaires measuring disgust, emotion and sensory variables. Those with an eating disorder reported significantly higher rates of self‐disgust than those with no history of disordered eating. In groups of women with self‐reported bulimia, self‐disgust was associated with sensation avoidance and sensation seek...

Daily Changes in Composition and Diversity of the Intestinal Microbiota in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa: A Series of Three Cases
Abstract Anorexia nervosa, a severe psychiatric illness, is associated with an intestinal microbial dysbiosis. Individual microbial signatures dominate in healthy samples, even over time and under controlled conditions, but whether microbial markers of the disorder overcome inter‐individual variation during the acute stage of illness or renourishment is unknown. We characterized daily changes in the intestinal microbiota in three acutely ill patients with anorexia nervosa over the entire course of hospital‐based renourishment and found significant, patient‐specific changes in microbial composition and diversity. This...

Evidence for Cognitive Remediation Therapy in Young People with Anorexia Nervosa: Systematic Review and Meta ‐analysis of the Literature
Abstract Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) for eating disorders has demonstrated promising findings in adult age groups, with randomised treatment trials and systematic reviews demonstrating medium to large effect sizes in improved cognitive performance. In recent years, several case series have been conducted for young people with anorexia nervosa, but these findings have not been synthesised in the form of a systematic review. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the evidence for the efficacy of CRT in child and adolescent age groups. Nine studies were identified, with a subsequent meta‐analysis suggesting improv...

Examining Maternal Psychopathology, Family Functioning and Coping Skills in Childhood Obesity: A Case –Control Study
This study aims to examine differences in maternal psychopathology, family functioning, expressed emotion and coping skills between families of a child with obesity and those with a normal‐weight child. This case–control study consisted of 50 mothers with a child (age 8–12 years) with obesity (p ≥ 97) and a control group of 50 mothers of a child with normal weight (p < 85), matched for age, sex and socio‐economic status. Compared with families with normal‐weight children, those with children with obesity showed significant differences in levels of trait anxiety, criticism and over‐protectiveness, an...

Chances and Limitations of Video Games in the Fight against Childhood Obesity —A Systematic Review
ConclusionsUsing video games for weight management exclusively does not deliver satisfying results. Video games as an additional guided component of prevention and treatment programs have the potential to increase compliance and thus enhance treatment outcome. Longitudinal Bi ‐directional Effects of Disordered Eating, Depression and Anxiety
ConclusionOur findings provide preliminary evidence that preventative measures designed to target concerns about eating and shape/weight might be most efficacious in reducing the transmission of effects between symptoms of DE, depression and anxiety. Intolerance of Uncertainty in Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta ‐Analysis
Abstract Intolerance of uncertainty is an empirically supported transdiagnostic construct that may have relevance in understanding eating disorders. We conducted a meta‐analysis and systematic review of intolerance of uncertainty in eating disorders using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We calculated random‐effects standardised mean differences (SMD) for studies utilising the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS) and summarised additional studies descriptively. Women with eating disorders have significantly higher IUS scores compared with healthy controls (SMD...

Physical Activity in Bariatric Surgery Patients: Does Temperament Matter?
DiscussionThe results indicate that temperament per se does not contribute to the level of PA in bariatric surgery patients. However, in post‐operative patients, lower BMI was associated with a higher likelihood of being physically active particularly in patients with anxious temperament. These preliminary findings need further investigation within longitudinal studies. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and Eating Disorders Association. (Source: European Eating Disorders Review)

Short ‐Term Treatment Outcomes and Dropout Risk in Men and Women with Eating Disorders
This study compared treatment outcomes between men and women with eating disorders (EDs) and analysed clinical predictors of treatment outcome. Our sample consisted of 131 male and 131 female ED patients who underwent cognitive behavioural therapy treatment. ED severity, personality and psychopathology were assessed using standard instruments. We found that the risk of dropout was higher for men with bulimia nervosa (BN) than for women with BN and that men with BN and other specified feeding and EDs were more likely to obtain full remission in comparison with their female counterparts. Predictive models of treatment outcom...

Comparative Effectiveness of Treatments for Binge ‐Eating Disorder: Systematic Review and Network Meta‐Analysis
Abstract Psychological and pharmacological interventions for binge‐eating disorder have previously demonstrated efficacy (compared with placebo or waitlist control); thus, we aimed to expand that literature with a review of comparative effectiveness. We searched MEDLINE,® EMBASE,® Cochrane Library, Academic OneFile, CINAHL® for binge‐eating disorder treatment articles and selected studies using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were sufficient for network meta‐analysis comparing two pharmacological interventions; psychological interventions were analysed qualitatively. In all, 28 treatment compa...
