Researching the decline in adolescent drinking: The need for a global and generational approach
Abstract Adolescent alcohol consumption has been in decline across many high‐income countries since the early to mid‐2000s. This is a significant public health trend, with few documented examples from history where such a global downward shift in alcohol consumption has occurred primarily among the adolescent segment of the population. In this commentary we describe the nature and breadth of the trend; reflect on the environmental, social and policy factors that have been proffered; and argue that to adequately understand and support the maintenance of these trends, three important methodological considerations are nee...

One explanation to rule them all? Identifying sub ‐groups of non‐drinking Swedish ninth graders
ConclusionsThe results imply that there is notable within‐group diversity in non‐drinking youth. Several mechanisms and explanations are thus likely to be behind the decline in drinking participation among Swedish adolescents. (Source: Drug and Alcohol Review)

Intravenous fentanyl use among people who inject drugs in Australia
ConclusionsFentanyl injectors in Australia are significantly more likely to identify as Indigenous, report frequent injection, inject in public and experience overdose. Increased access to harm reduction interventions, including naloxone distribution, wheel filters and supervised injection facilities, are likely to benefit this population. Tranquilizer misuse among active cocaine users: Predictors of initiation
ConclusionsThe incidence rate of TM initiation was high among a sample of cocaine users. Initiation was predicted by a problematic drug use pattern involving polydrug use, involvement in the street economy and having been in treatment for a SUD. These findings have implications for prevention and harm reduction strategies. (Source: Drug and Alcohol Review)

The impact of cohort substance use upon likelihood of transitioning through stages of alcohol and cannabis use and use disorder: Findings from the Australian National Survey on Mental Health and Wellbeing
ConclusionsClear associations were documented between cohort‐level prevalence of substance use and personal risk of subsequent transitions of individuals in the cohort from use to greater substance involvement. This relationship remained significant over and above associations involving the individual's age of initiation. These findings have important implications for our understanding of the causal pathways into and out of problematic substance use. (Source: Drug and Alcohol Review)
