En bloc resection of the external iliac vein along with broad ligament leiomyosarcoma: A case report
We describe a patient whose right external iliac vein was transected during the removal of a large broad ligament leiomyosarcoma invading the right external iliac vein. The patient's recovery following surgery was uneventful, and she remained disease-free 6 months postoperatively, with minimal morbidity. In describing this case, we hope to educate and inform other gynaecological oncologists facing a similar surgical challenge. We also propose that resection of the external iliac vessels in such cases is safe and feasible, and summarise the anatomical course of venous collaterals, which develop when the external iliac vei...

Severe fatty liver of pregnancy requiring an extremely large amount of blood transfusion, surgery and transarterial embolization: A case report
We report a case of massive bleeding due to a coagulation disorder associated with acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP); the patient survived by massive transfusion. She presented at 34 weeks of gestation, met six of the Swansea criteria, and was diagnosed with severe AFLP. We performed an emergency cesarean section because termination of the pregnancy was necessary for the treatment of the AFLP. After the surgery, which led to massive bleeding in the peritoneal cavity due to the coagulation disorder, she underwent two further operations and three transarterial embolizations. She received factor VII and underwent plasma...

Bilateral ovarian torsion with ovarian fusion in the setting of polycystic ovarian syndrome: A case report
ConclusionOvarian torsion should be suspected in the setting of abdominal pain, enlarged polycystic ovaries, and absent adnexal blood flow on ultrasound. This case demonstrates the resilience of the adnexa and the highly variable time to necrosis in the setting of torsion. (Source: Case Reports in Womens Health)

Incisional pyoderma gangrenosum after caesarean section: Two case reports
DiscussionDefinitive diagnosis of PG is essential because its treatment differs from that of SSI. PG after caesarean section can be misdiagnosed as SSI, even when there is a history of wound dehiscence or PG. (Source: Case Reports in Womens Health)

Surgical management of an incarcerated uterus in a gynecological patient: A case report
Publication date: Available online 14 May 2019Source: Case Reports in Women's HealthAuthor(s): Fatimah Z. Fahimuddin, Rebecca Murphy, Michael O'ShaughnessyAbstractUterine incarceration is most often described as occurring in pregnancies. Presenting with severe pelvic pain, urinary retention, and in some cases spontaneous abortion, this complication often arises at 12–15 weeks of gestational age. Although usually considered an obstetrical complication, uterine incarceration can occur in nongravid females. This case report presents a gynecological patient with acute urinary retention secondary to uterine incarceration. T...

The diagnostic conundrum of maternal mirror syndrome progressing to pre-eclampsia – A case report
Publication date: Available online 14 May 2019Source: Case Reports in Women's HealthAuthor(s): Caroline Ruth Mathias, Carmela RizviAbstractMirror syndrome, also called Ballantyne syndrome, is a rare condition in pregnancy, defined by the presence of the clinical triad of fetal hydrops, placentomegaly and maternal oedema. Any aetiology of fetal hydrops, including rhesus iso-immunization, congenital infection, twin-to-twin transfusion, structural anomalies and fetal malignancies, can lead to the syndrome. The pathogenesis, although not well established, mimics trophoblastic damage and maternal vascular endothelial dysfunctio...

The differential diagnosis of fetal facial tumors: A case report of a neonatal granular cell tumor (GCT)
We present a case of prenatally suspected proboscis lateralis. This diagnosis was revised postnatally to a facial hemangioma. The tumor did not regress with β-blocker therapy for 5 months, and so a biopsy was then performed, which showed it was a granular cell tumor (GCT). This was later successfully excised, with clear margins. This case is important because there has been only one reported case of neonatal GCT, and because it shows that even with technologically advanced prenatal diagnostic methods, reaching the correct diagnosis can still be challenging.
