Transition from pediatric to adult health care for young adults with neurological disorders: parental perspectives.
CONCLUSIONS: This study has provided a greater understanding of parental perceptions of transition care for young adults with a complex chronic neurological disorder who have an intellectual impairment. The emotional toll on the parents is tremendous and requires thoughtful consideration when planning the transition process for these young adults. Although all parents acknowledged the hardships and adversity they faced during the process were immense, they all felt that with better guidance and improved resources, the experience for future families could be a positive and satisfying experience. Nurses' accountability for stroke quality of care: part one: Review of the literature on nursing-sensitive patient outcomes.
Authors: Green T, Kelloway L, Davies-Schinkel C, Hill M, Lindsay MP Abstract Over the past decade, an exciting area of research has emerged that demonstrates strong links between specific nursing care activities and patient outcomes. This body of research has resulted in the identification of a set of "nursing-sensitive outcomes"(NSOs). These NSOs may be interpreted with more meaning when they are linked to evidence-based best practice guidelines, which provide a structured means of ensuring care is consistent among all health care team members, across geographic locations, and across care settings. Uptake...

Becoming normal: a grounded theory study on the emotional process of stroke recovery.
Authors: Gallagher P Abstract The purpose of this grounded theory study was to examine the emotional process of stroke recovery, personally experienced by stroke survivors. Nine stroke survivors living in Atlantic Canada participated in this study. Data collection came from formal unstructured interviews and one group interview. The central problem experienced by these stroke survivors was being less than 100%. The basic social process used to address this problem was becoming normal, which is composed of three stages: recognizing stroke will not go away, choosing to work on recovery, and working on being ...

Association between time-to-presentation and clinical outcome in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage: an observational study.
CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study, duration from symptom onset to hospital presentation was not independently associated with death or severe disability at hospital discharge following SAH. Age and H+H score were independent predictors of clinical outcome after non-traumatic SAH. PMID: 22338211 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (Source: Canadian Journal of Neuroscience Nursing)

The effect of education on nurses' assessments in an epilepsy monitoring unit.
CONCLUSIONS: The Nurse Assessment Rating Scale enabled the researchers to transform a qualitative measure of assessment into a quantitative indicator that could be compared pre- and post-education. Second, data indicated that the education significantly improved the assessment scores. With education, original protocols were reinforced and assessments became more consistent resulting in improved scores. Third, using a multimodal education format targeted aspects of performance such as respect and compassion. Specialist nursing training in Poland: applications for neuroscience nursing.
CONCLUSION: The model demonstrates the need for the content of pre- and post-undergraduate degree education in neurological nursing to be graduated, based on the frameworks for undergraduate education (acquiring the knowledge and basic skills for performing the work of nurses) and postgraduate education (acquiring knowledge and specialist skills necessary for providing advanced nursing care including medical acts on patients with nervous system diseases). IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: New and advanced skills gained in specialization training can be applied to complex functions, roles and professional tasks undertaken b...

Patients' perceptions of their roles in goal setting in a spinal cord injury regional rehabilitation program.
This study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive methodology to explore patients' perceptions of their roles in setting goals in a spinal cord injury regional rehabilitation program. Imogene King's theory of goal attainment was used to frame the study. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed using a content analysis. The results revealed four themes: Visioning, Redefining, Brainstorming, and Rebuilding Participants (n = 13) envisioned their roles as setting an overarching priority goal, defining detailed rehabilitation goals, sharing knowledge with the team, and rebuilding skills to attain goals. Implic...
