Development and validation of a nomogram to predict recurrence and melanoma ‐specific mortality in patients with negative sentinel lymph nodes
ConclusionA nomogram for predicting recurrence and MSM in patients with melanoma and negative SNs was constructed and validated. It could provide personalized estimates useful for tailoring surveillance strategies (reduce or increase intensity), and selection of patients for adjuvant therapy or clinical trials. Systematic review of the safety and efficacy of osseointegration prosthesis after limb amputation
ConclusionOsseointegration after limb amputation improves prosthetic use, comfort when sitting, walking ability, mobility, gait and quality of life. However, it is associated with an increased risk of soft tissue infection. (Source: British Journal of Surgery)

Feasibility study of combined dynamic imaging and lymphaticovenous anastomosis surgery for breast cancer ‐related lymphoedema
ConclusionLVA resulted in a sustained volume reduction in selected patients and may offset the burden of CGT. Further work is required to identify biomarkers that predict a favourable response to LVA surgery. (Source: British Journal of Surgery)

Disparities in the management of paediatric splenic injury
ConclusionThe management of children with isolated splenic injury is different depending on where they are treated. The rate of non ‐operative management is lower in hospitals without a paediatric surgeon present. (Source: British Journal of Surgery)

Experimental study of needle recording electrodes placed on the thyroid cartilage for neuromonitoring during thyroid surgery
ConclusionEMG amplitudes obtained using TC electrodes were higher, and identified RLN injury earlier than ET electrodes.Surgical relevanceNeedle electrodes placed on the thyroid cartilage (TC) are an alternative to endotracheal tube (ET) electrodes for assessing the function of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) in thyroid surgery. This study used an experimental porcine model to evaluate the use of needle electrodes inserted in the TC, compared with ET electrodes, for producing an electromyographic (EMG) profile of the RLN. Nine areas of the TC, with various needle insertion depths and orientations, were compared. Pericho...

Mitochondrial function after associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy in an experimental model
ConclusionImpaired mitochondrial function and biogenesis, along with the rapid energy ‐demanding cell proliferation, may cause hepatocyte dysfunction after ALPPS.Surgical relevanceAssociating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) is a well known surgical strategy that combines liver partition and portal vein ligation. This method induces immense regeneration in the future liver remnant. The rapid volume increase is of benefit for resectability, but the mortality and morbidity rates of ALPPS are strikingly high. Moreover, lagging functional recovery of the remnant liver has been reported ...

Action observation for sensorimotor learning in surgery
ConclusionObservational learning is an effective method for learning surgical skills. An improved understanding of observational learning may further inform the refinement and use of these methods in contemporary surgical training curricula. (Source: British Journal of Surgery)
