A 64-year-old woman came to the emergency department complaining of cough, shortness of breath, itchy throat, and runny nose. She had end-stage renal disease and was on hemodialysis three times per week; she also had hypertension and type 2 diabetes and had undergone a left below-knee amputation. Her serum creatinine was 9.48 mg/dL; a typical value for adult women is 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL. She was transferred to the hemodialysis unit where she underwent hemodialysis and was then admitted to the medical floor. (Source: AORN Journal)
