Developing new solar cells - cheaper, or more efficient?
Kavli Medal and Lecture The next generation of solar cells use strongly absorbing materials such as polymers that can be deposited cheaply over large areas by printing, thereby offering a feasible way to install solar power on an affordable scale. This lecture will describe how we can improve the performance of these devices by controlling the complex nanostructures that allow charges to be extracted from the active layer. It will present a new approach that might break the 34% efficiency limit that applies to all simple solar cells, by extracting energy from the blue and green parts of the solar spectrum that is normally...

Cosy Science presents: The evolution of cancer with Prof David Pellman
What environmental factors shape the genetic make-up of our cells to make them cancerous? Is this an instant transition from healthy to cancerous or one of many steps to become malignant? Can we carry cancerous cells that we cannot detect? Professor David Pellman is currently the Margaret M. Dyson Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His lab studies the mechanisms underlying normal cell division and the cell division defects in cancer cells that cause genetic instability. David com...

Storms, floods and droughts: predicting and reporting adverse weather
2012 was one of the “top five wettest years on record”, however the beginning of the year saw a widespread drought across much of the UK. Join David Shukman, Science Editor for BBC News, and Professor Tim Palmer FRS as they discuss extreme and adverse weather conditions with Liz Howell, Head of BBC Weather. How do these events arise, how they are reported, and how can the latest research improve the forecasting of storms or flooding in the future? David Shukman previously worked at the BBC as European Correspondent, World Affairs Correspondent and Environment and Science Correspondent. He has reported from more than...

Cafe Scientifique - How can the Arctic help find life on other planets?
How do microorganisms survive in extreme conditions? What can their evolution teach us about our search for life on other planets? Discuss with Professor Liane Benning how extremophiles, organisms adapted to live in extreme conditions, and their survival adaptations are being used to inform the search for extra-terrestrial life. Professor Liane Benning is Professor of Experimental Biogeochemistry at University of Leeds. Her research investigates the biochemical signals of bacteria and fungus in extreme environments. Venue: The Royal Society Start date: Mon, 25 Feb 2013 18:30:00 +0000 End date: Thu, 28 Feb 2013 20:0...

Discovery of a dynamic atmosphere at one of Saturn’s moons, Enceladus
In recent years, Enceladus, Saturn’s sixth largest moon, has become a major attraction for scientists, with many believing it offers the best hope we have of discovering other life in our solar system. NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has been orbiting Saturn since July 2004. After passing close by to Enceladus, the spacecraft detected plumes of water vapour emanating from cracks around the south pole of the moon, which have more recently been discovered to contain complex organic compounds, necessary ingredients for the existence of life. Michele Dougherty, Principal Investigator for the magnetic field instrument onb...
