Do Gena and Chuck Norris Have a Right to Sue Over GBCAs?
Hollywood street fighter Chuck Norris and his wife, Gena Norris have filed a lawsuit in the San Francisco Superior Court claiming that Gena was poisoned by a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA), the substance used in MRI or MRA procedures to enhance image quality. The couple is seeking over $10 million in damages from several healthcare companies, including pharmaceutical company McKesson Corp and Bracco S.p.A., an Italian healthcare company. Their attorneys at Cutter Law P.C. of Oakland state that these manufacturers knew of the toxins these agents carry and neglected to distribute warnings. Gena underwent MRI for her ...

Do Interventions to Dismantle the Gender Gap in Radiology Actually Work?
Despite academic efforts to reduce the gender disparity in the field, there are still not enough women in radiology. According to a recent study published inCurrent Problems in Diagnostic Radiology, efforts to increase female presence in radiology have fallen short.Leadstudy author Elizabeth D. Yuan, a medical student at University of Massachusetts Medical School, evaluated the effectiveness of the programs and curriculum designed toincrease female interest. These interventions included: flexible clinical experiences during the third year of medical school, which featured electives that ran in tandem with the core clinica...

Do Radiologists Get the Recognition They Deserve?
Many people don ’t understand the kind of work a radiologist does. In fact, 44 percent of patients don’t even consider their radiologist to be a doctor. The role of a radiologist is often misconstrued, and many have embellished ideas of a radiologist’s lifestyle. Radiologists often solely operate behind the s cenes — making it hard for patients and other physicians to appreciate the value of their work. More so, patients struggle to comprehend the complexities that are involved in the image reading process. “When patients don’t recognize our training and expertise, we lose the ability to weigh in on their decis...

TechHub ’s new NYC site brings London startups Revolut, Aire, Cronofy, Callsign
Co-working and startup office leviathan WeWork continues to expand in London. It ’s latest accounts show that it has £2 billion of lease commitments in the UK (25 offices in London and two in Manchester) over the next 25 years, indicating it is upbeat about the prospects of the city post-Brexit.However, rival office space provider Regus is less bullish, issuing a property warning recently amid signs London ’s commercial office market could be hit by Brexit. Regus is valued at £1.9 billion, versus WeWork’s $20 billion, even though it has 5 times as much office space globally. Try chewing on that…One startup co-wor...

What's Your Role in Radiology?
Building a rewarding and meaningful career in radiology can ’t happen overnight. Strategizing and implementing long-term goals to avoid wasting time in uninspiring roles is crucial to establishing long-term success. However, figuring out exactly how to create a fulfilling career trajectory is a challenge. What are the questions a radiologist or imaging tec hnician should keep in mind when building a career? What ’s my expertise? Radiologists should consider their desired skill set, and pursue the necessary requirements needed in order to become a master in that area. For those who know exactly what they want to do, th...

What Are We Going to do With a Mind Reading MRI?
Mary Lou Jepsen is on a mission to make MRI less confining, expensive, and spatially intimidating. The former Google and Facebook executive is busy gettingOpenwater off the ground, a wearable MRI that claims to take more accurate images of the body than a traditional machine. Named by the singer Peter Gabriel, Openwater ’s device looks like a stocking cap lined with specialized LCD screens and sensors that scan the body with near-infrared light that dash across the body like a game of laser tag. The device measures the light and by doing so, creates a hologram. “We’re making it totally transparent,”Jepsen told Re...

Should Pathologists and Radiologists Become One Speciality?
A new study has found a growing connection between pathology and radiology. According to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and the Scripps Research Institute, the two specialties should be combined into one role called the “information specialist.” Not only would this individual interpret diagnostic images, but they would oversee artificial intelligence disease-screening technology.Since the dawning of the specialty, radiologists have come to rely on computers to make accurate assessments. The study authors hypothesize that since interpreting these images is a form of pattern recognition, we should use auto...

RadPartners Strikes Again and Conquers Southwest Diagnostic Imaging
Perhaps the largest physician-led radiology group, Radiology Partners, is only getting bigger with its recent acquisition of Arizona-based Southwest Diagnostic Imaging (SDI). The move signifies a 25 percent staff increase for RadPartners, as SDI already has a substantial presence in the Phoenix area with 120 radiologists practicing in 18 hospitals and 25 outpatient clinics. In 2004, Scottsdale Medical Imaging and Valley Radiologists merged to form SDI, and in 2014, they welcomed East Valley Diagnostic Imaging. They operate in conjunction with Banner Health and HonorHealth, the two largest healthcare systems in Maricopa Cou...

The Ultimate Toy for Radiologists: the Samsung CHG90 Monitor
A study has yet to be published that says working with a massive, peripheral vision-inclusive monitor will increase productivity, but using the Samsung “super-ultrawide” CHG90 monitor might be best way to put the theory into practice. Measuring 49-inches wide, the CHG90 is two 16:9 monitors rolled into one. Its vertical resolution is 1080p, which isn ’t as sharp as 1440p quad-HD or 4K ultra-HD; however it still displays a strikingly clear image. Regardless of what kind of programs you’re running on the monitor, you’re going to need a powerful central processing unit. For hospitals and clinics that favor consumer-...

This is What Happens When Academic Radiologists Commit Medicare Fraud
After potentially years of processing fraudulent Medicare claims and a prolonged investigation, two radiologists finally plead guilty in federal court. Kenneth L. Rall, 82, the former chairman of the University of Missouri ’s radiology department and Michael E. Richards, 65, who previously served as the University’s head of mammography, face up to 10 years in federal prison after collectively filing $190,000 in fraudulent Medicare claims. Rall and Richards signed off hundreds of diagnostic images evaluated by resident radiologists that they never actually reviewed. In order to receive government reimbursement through M...

Job prospects for Radiology Tech
Any Rad Techs out there, please respond. I keep reading the job market for Radiology Technicians/technologists is inflated. I read in various blogs that it is different in different areas. All these posts are older and I want to know if anyone can give me a sense of current scenario. If anyone can give their personal contact, I can email my questions/concerns. Hope to hear some answers. Thanks so much for your time! (Source: radRounds)

What Imaging Tech Does Your Radiology Department Need?
Technology continues penetrating the healthcare sphere, providing physicians with comprehensive solutions able to improve patient care.Radiologists, in particular may  choose from a wealth of imaging systems to store and share images:1. Picture archiving and communication systems (PACS);2. Radiology information systems (RIS);3. Hospital information systems (HIS).Their combinations are also able to enhance  the workflow and productivity within the department:1. RIS + HIS;2. PACS + HIS;3. PACS + RIS + PACS.However, there are no perfect systems — each of them needs adjustments, for example additional features or integrati...
