Flu During Pregnancy May Increase Child’s Risk for Bipolar Disorder
Pregnant mothers’ exposure to the flu was associated with a nearly fourfold increased risk that their child would develop bipolar disorder in adulthood, in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. The findings add to mounting evidence of possible shared underlying causes and illness processes with schizophrenia, which some studies have also linked to prenatal exposure to influenza. Alan Brown, M.D., M.P.H, of Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute, a grantee of the NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), said: Prospective mothers should take common sense preventive measures...

The Incredible, Edible Egg
High cholesterol causes cardiovascular disease. Eggs are high in cholesterol; a large egg contains about 210mg of the stuff, which is concentrated in the yolk. The American Heart Association has recommended that people limit their daily cholesterol consumption to less than 300mg to maintain heart health [1]. Thus, it would seem that we should eat fewer eggs, or at least fewer egg yolks, to prevent cardiovascular disease. Right? Two new reports call that conclusion, straightforward as it may seem, into question. One examined how the other nutrients present in egg yolks can actually protect against coronary artery disease ...

Eating More Fiber May Lower Risk of Stroke
According to a new British study, eating more fiber-rich foods appears to lower stroke risk [1]. The research is published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. The meta-analysis combined the results of eight studies published between 1990 and 2012 from the United States, northern Europe, Australia, and Japan. Scientists found that a simple seven gram increase in daily dietary fiber — equivalent to one serving of whole wheat pasta plus two servings of fruits or vegetables — was associated with a seven percent decrease in first-time stroke risk [1]. Dietary fiber is the part of the plant that the ...

Implantable Blood Testing Laboratory on a Chip
Scientists from the EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne or, in English, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) have developed an implantable blood testing laboratory that provides an immediate analysis of compounds in the body. The device will allow for a greater level of personalized care than traditional blood tests currently provide. The miniaturized device is just a few cubic millimeters in volume but includes five sensors and a radio transmitter. Outside the body, a battery patch provides a 1/10 watt of power through the patient’s skin. A tiny electrical coil in the chip receives the powe...

American Urology Association Changes Position on Routine Prostate Testing
The American Urological Association, which in recent years has defended the PSA screening test, has changed it’s position and no longer recommends routine testing for men. On Friday, the American Urological Association (AUA) announced that men under the age of 55 should not get routinely screened with a PSA test  [1]. Men who are between the ages of 55 and 69 should talk with their doctors about the benefits and harms of testing and proceed based on their personal values and preferences. The new guidelines for early detection of prostate cancer were developed using evidence from a systematic literature review rathe...
