A Child Who Stutters Shares His Experience at a Science Fair
Conducting a science fair project on stuttering can provide an outstanding opportunity for students to experience empowerment when it comes to their speech. As we launch into National Stuttering Awareness Week, I want to share the story of a student who did just that. Last year, Jacob, a brilliant 12-year-old, elected to do his science fair project on the experiences of people—like himself—who stutter. He researched the disorder online, consulted with me and other university faculty, designed his own survey, and distributed it to hundreds of adults who stutter. Many of those adults rushed to provide feedback to his que...

Poll Shows Caregivers Need Help Flagging Early Warning Signs
May is upon us! Today marks the beginning of Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM), when public education about communication disorders shines a well-deserved spotlight on audiology and speech-language pathology. The 2019 BHSM theme is Communication Across the Lifespan, making the opening outreach focus on communication disorders in young children a great place to start. Today ASHA unveils new survey results that shed light on the state of parental awareness about the signs of speech, language, and hearing disorders. Steps for Keeping Students ’ Skills Sharp Over Summer
Speech-language pathologists understand the havoc transitions can wreak on speech-language progress and performance. Everything from weather to a change in routine can produce obstacles to generalizing skills or bolstering performance. So when summer comes around, it’s key to give students tools to minimize the disruption caused by a few months away from treatment. Empowering our students and their families with creative, functional ideas to maintain and generalize skills into their daily routines can help them keep up skills over the summer break. Here are three steps that work for me in tackling the summer transition f...

World Health Organization Recommends Against Screen Time for Infants
Screen-time guidance is a first for the World Health Organization (WHO). As part of a larger report on the risks of physical inactivity and sleep deprivation for children under age 5, WHO recommends no solitary, sedentary screen time at all for infants up to age 1, and only an hour a day for children ages 1 to 5. Editor’s note: As always, children who use low- and high-tech augmentative and alternative communication devices (AAC) should continue to use them at all times—and in an interactive way. The guidelines say infants should get at least 30 minutes each day—spread throughout the day—on their stomachs, as well...

SLP Writes Award-Winning Horror Film Featuring Lead Character With Hearing Loss
Before becoming a speech-language pathologist, I attempted to be a full-time screenwriter. (Hey, I’m from Los Angeles, it’s a birthright). After some early success, near misses, and heartbreak, I decided to find a more stable career—and a source of income—I felt equally passionate about. I discovered speech-language pathology and the rest is history. I’ve worked as an SLP for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 10 years, and love my job. However, the writing bug still gnawed at me. By day, I’m a mild-mannered SLP, and by night, I feed my coffee habit and my literary dreams. My work with children with sp...

Act to Boost IDEA Funding and Reduce Paperwork
Take action to support ASHA’s requests to Congress to increase funding for the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and to address the paperwork burden of school-based providers. Every year, Congress must agree on federal funding levels for the following fiscal year. Right now, funding decisions are being made for IDEA for fiscal year (FY) 2020. In letters to the House Appropriations Committee and Senate Appropriations Committee, ASHA is urging Congress to increase funding for Part B State Grants to $13.97 billion (a total that includes an increase to $441.8 million for IDEA’s Part B Section 619, the pro...

Got Civility? ASHA Digital Toolkit Promotes Respectful Online Communication
As communication professionals, ASHA members can and should set a strong example of promoting and practicing civil discourse. But 53% of members responding to an ASHA survey had experienced uncivil discourse on professional social media sites in the previous 12 months, and 36% had experienced incivility on personal social media. Although ASHA has codes of conduct and behavior for its official online platforms—such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram—ASHA can’t establish or enforce such codes on other sites, such as private Facebook groups. But members tell us they are often frustrated by the incivility on these site...

Mirror, Mirror: How Our Voices Reflect Who We Are
As World Voice Day approaches on April 16, I’ve been reflecting on voice as “who we are,” “identity,” “gender,” “emotion” and “vocation.” As speech-language pathologists, we spend hours helping people find their voices. This could be with use of  augmentative and and alternative communication (AAC), increased fluency, or behavioral voice rehabilitation. For this article, I want to focus on voice as a whole, especially as an SLP who specializes in treating voice and upper airway disorders. Identity We all, in some way or another, feel our voice reflects our identity. If you ever ex...

Governance ASHA has two advisory councils (ACs)—the Audiology Advisory Council and the Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Council—designed to identify, analyze, discuss and prioritize issues of concern for the BOD. 5 Quick Tips for Selecting Clinical Materials to Respect Clients ’ Cultural Backgrounds
As it becomes increasingly easy to download “no prep” or “print and go” materials from a variety of online resources, many new—and experienced—clinicians might not realize the materials they plan to use don’t align with their clients’ cultural preferences and background knowledge. Even with a conscious awareness of the importance of cultural competence, I’ve made mistakes in material selections, as both a clinician and clinical supervisor. As a new clinician, I once gasped in embarrassment as the “Santa” articulation card fell out of my deck and on to the table during a group session with students w...
