Sirolimus for Polycystic Kidney Disease
New treatment options for polycystic kidney disease do not come along very often. The nature of the disease is such that treatment is inherently difficult as the pathophysiology is incompletely understood. Despite that various methods are currently being investigated. One such is the drug sirolimus, which  has been mentioned before. More recently however a pilot study performed in adult polycystic kidney disease patients has added further hope that sirolimus may one day be used routinely in this disease. The effect of the drug sirolimus on development and growth of cysts was investigated over 6 consecutive months in 8 pa...

New Treatments For FSGS -ASN Conference
Idiopathic focal and segmental glomerular sclerosis or FSGS is one of the most common causes of non diabetic kidney disease in the world and also one of the least satisfying to treat due to the difficulty with initiating and maintaining a durable remission. For decades the standard of treatment has been steroid therapy in high doses given either daily or every other day. This results in significant toxicity which includes the development of diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, personality changes, weight gain, easy bruising etc. Yet these negative effects of steroid therapy are outweighed significantly by the result of not tre...

Diuretic or Calcium Channel Blocker for CKD
It has been suggested by researchers that the diuretic clorthalidone should be the first line of antihypertensive therapy with a few caveats. Firstly in the presence of certain co-morbidities other drugs with a proven track record of reducing end organ damage should be instituted as first line instead. Thus it has been suggested that in patients with diabetic kidney disease and angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) be commenced early due to its proven reno-protective effects in type 2 diabetics with kidney disease. The results of the ACCOMPLISH trial as reported in the LANCET may change the above approach. From the available ...

Blood test results 2014
After over a year with no tests, I decided to subject myself to the needle again and have my blood analyzed. The good news: no change The tests show no signs of kidney function degradation. Serum creatinine is 2.0mg/dL, exactly what it was when I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease over five years ago. All other parameters are pretty consistent with the results obtained over the last five years and are within, or close to, the normal healthy range. This either means that:a) My hard work watching my diet and trying to live a healthy life is paying off and protecting my kidneys from further damage, or,b) None of my lif...

Signs of Life Elsewhere
On a recent trip to Portand, this colorful image of the giant gothic P smacked my visual cortex. This extraordinary endeavor is an enormous replica of the Portland Art Museum logo made entirely from bicycle helmets. It is hanging above their entrance in observance of the show Cyclepedia, an exhibition of iconic bicycle design. The exhibit inside was pretty dang fun to see, though difficult to photograph. Probably my favorite was the Capo Elite “Eis”, a remarkable hybrid bike and ice skate design developed in 1930 by Otto and Walter Cap, complete with an ice skate blade in...

My Poodle Has Wings
Acrylic 30 x 36 inches. Recently I was talking to a friend, and she really liked my paintings with splashes of red. 'But we don't have red trees in Alberta', I replied. 'So', she said, 'If I wanted to paint my poodle with wings, I could…it's an artist prerogative.” So this is for my friend, a pretty accurate scene from Moraine Lake…except for the red bush.
