Predictive factors for MS in CIS
Spanish research found that the number of lesions was the best indicator that someone with CIS would develop MS. Oligoclonal bands were a 'medium-impact prognostic factor' and gender and location of lesions less indicative. Disease modifying drug treatment extended the time before MS diagnosis. Importance of location of lesions
A study using a high powered MRI found that lesions seen in the cerebral cortex (grey matter) were more associated with cognitive and physical symptoms than white matter lesions. Anxiety and depression
A Canadian study found that women with MS were more likely to have higher anxiety scores than men. Rates of depression were similar across the genders (which differs from the general population where women tend to have more depression). Factors affecting life expectancy
A French study found that life expectancy for people with MS was about 7 years less than for the general population. The risk of dying earlier was higher in men, in people with progressive MS, and those with later onset of MS. This agrees with results from a recent Canadian study. Tecfidera and PML
A second case of PML has been reported in someone taking dimethyl fumarate (Tecfidera). Few details available so far, but like the previously reported instance, this person also had had prolonged severe lymphopenia (low white blood cell count). Art and cognition
The BBC's Trust Me I'm A Doctor programme tested the effects on cognition (on healthy people) of walking, doing puzzles and joining an art class. All had some effect, though the combination of intellectual activity, standing and a social environment meant that art classes seemed to be best.
