New Zealand Prime Minister: Flattening Curve Wasn ’t Enough for New Zealand
By NICK PERRY Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand this year pulled off a moonshot that remains the envy of most other nations: It eliminated the coronavirus. But the goal was driven as much by fear as it was ambition, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern revealed Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press. She said the target grew from an early realization the nation’s health system simply couldn’t cope with a big outbreak. And there have been plenty of bumps along the way. When a handful of unexplained cases began cropping up in August, Ardern found herself defending wildly exagger...

Whatcom County (WA) Seeks Better, Cheaper Answer to 911 Call Centers
Robert Mittendorf The Bellingham Herald (Bellingham, Wash.) (MCT) Dec. 15—Combining Whatcom County’s two 911 dispatch centers, whose operators separately send law-enforcement officers or firefighters to calls for service, is back on the County Council’s agenda. It’s both logical and a cost-saving measure to combine the two 911 centers, said Councilman Tyler Byrd. “I’ve been working on all the documentation I can find on this and talking to people. I can’t find a single efficiency that comes out of this the way it is today,” Byrd said during a No...

Study Lays Out EMS Options in Traverse City (MI)
Jordan Travis The Record-Eagle, Traverse City, Mich. (MCT) Dec. 15—TRAVERSE CITY — As a new ambulance provider takes over throughout northwest Michigan, city leaders are mulling the future of emergency medical services in Traverse City. Most commissioners said at a study session Monday that they’re not interested in continuing with a status quo where Traverse City Fire Department responds to medical calls and Mobile Medical Response transports the patient to the hospital if needed. There are plenty of options to consider, and while the city enters into contract negotia...

Seizure in the Skies of Remoteness: A Case Review
Conclusion While this case review describes an unusual approach to a medical retrieval, remote health care providers in developing nations face major clinical, ethical and legal challenges such as these described. The challenges of prehospital care are dynamic, yet in the remote context they are even more so. In these situations, a careful assessment of risk verses reward is paramount. In these situations, it I just as important to withhold certain interventions as it is to administer them. References Broughton W. Pre-hospital paediatric seizures: midazolam versus diazepam. Leadership in EMS
Image provided by Jeff Fishel, MSHA, NRP The Circle of Care starts with providers. There are many hot topic items in the realm of EMS these days. One of which is that of leadership, or the lack thereof, in our industry. While I would never even attempt to assume some sort of a title of “expert in leadership,” I feel in my career I have been extremely fortunate to learn from the best and to also learn from those who were not. We’ve all seen it on social media with the mass sharing of the “leadership” meme. We’ve heard the leadership talks at conferences, read the articles and participated in the discussions...

Communication, Relationships at the Heart of Interoperable Active Threat Exercise
Photo Phoenix Police Department Phoenix Police command officers using the hood of a police SUV to coordinate the Unified Response plan.   Scott Petersen, Phoenix Fire Department In 2015, Phoenix Children’s Hospital invited the Phoenix Fire and Police Departments to participate in an active threat exercise at the hospital’s main campus. The exercise – a hostage-barricade situation – was a wake-up call for regional public safety responders. Public safety organizations make a commitment to protect, to honor, to save. However, the exercise at Phoenix Children’s shined a light on all of the ways we were...
