Down on the Pharm: Students are exposed to pharmaceutical marketing more often in rural clinics (David Evans MD)
To mitigate the influence of pharmaceutical marketing on learners, academic medical centers (AMCs) have adopted policies to limit student/industry interaction. Many clinical experiences occur outside of the AMC. The purpose of this study was to compare medical students' exposure to pharmaceutical marketing in off campus rural and urban underserved clinical sites. We surveyed rising second year medical students in underserved clinical sites in five northwestern states to evaluate their exposure to pharmaceutical marketing. Medical schools have been improving the ways they attract, admit, and educate students. In an environment where access to health care is a major issue, a multifaceted approach is necessary to promote careers in primary care. The Three Pillar approach addresses the (1) pipeline, (2) admissions, and (3) medical school experience. Ignoring any of the three pillars will result in a suboptimal outcome. Implementing a 6-Year Rural Pathway (Janice M Spalding MD, FAAFP)
There is growing need to address health care inequality and to deliver care to underserved populations. Current research indicates deficiencies in health outcomes stemming from lack of health care availability in rural areas. Primary care and family medicine are attracting fewer medical students and less than 3% of medical students indicate they plan to practice in a small town or rural area. It is known that students from rural areas are more likely to return after training to a rural area practice. Often, students who are from rural areas are not aware of opportunities of a career in medicine. Working with health care ed...
