Opiate Addiction and Treatment Resources from the National Library of Medicine
In response to the growing heroin epidemic in the United States, the National Library of Medicine’s Specialized Information Services has created a portal to provide resources and information on prescribing, overdose, medication-assisted treatment, and recovery. According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, addiction is defined as: “A primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or rel...

Persistent Identifiers
Have your researchers or other patrons ever asked you how to create a “permanent,” persistent, or long-lasting  link to a webpage, data set, article, file, dissertation, or even a physical object? While there are several online options, two tools/services used by the University of Washington Libraries are listed below. Perma.cc is a free, online tool built by Harvard’s Library Innovation Lab and supported by libraries and institutions across the country. It allows users to create a link to online content, such as a webpage, that will always be accessible, regardless of what happens to the original source. No more li...

It ’ s Getting Hot Out There!
CDC Beat the Heat Infographic It’s heating up here in Seattle and most parts of the Pacific Northwest with temperatures reaching triple digits in some areas. Senior Health Information
As many of you know, the NIH Senior Health website will be discontinued as of August 1. As unfortunate as it is to lose this great resource, other senior health information resources do exist. Not all of these are National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources but do provide an array of information pertaining to aging and health for seniors themselves, for caregivers and for those whose work focuses on older adult concerns. MedlinePlus provides information with a Seniors demographic group which includes a listing of health topics related to this age group. The NIH National Institute on Aging provides a number of resources f...

Savoring the Harvest Beyond the Season, Food Preservation
Summer is the time of an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables when they are at their best. Whether you grow your own or purchase from a local farmers market you know there is nothing better than eating a fresh tomato or recently picked cucumbers. It would be wonderful to have it fresh all year around but for many of us these summer time fruits and vegetables can only be enjoyed through food preservation. Home preserved foods are often healthier and tastier than those bought in the grocery store. It can also be cheaper and is a great skill to have. But not all of us have had the privilege of growing up with a garden and...

The Evidence Is In —Singing Works!
You’ve probably heard of evidence-based medicine, but have you ever encountered evidence-based library and information practice?  It’s a movement that encourages librarians and information professionals to use research evidence in their daily practice, just as health care providers do, and to conduct their own research in order to inform their practice. Not only that, but there is an open access journal called (what else?) Evidence Based Library and Information Practice, there is a great new compilation of articles edited by two giants in the field, Denise Koufogiannakis and Alison Brettle, and there is an internation...
