Sugar is hiding in plain sight - TED-Ed video by UCSF endocrinologist
When you eat something loaded with sugar, your taste buds, your gut and your brain all take notice. This activation of your reward system is not unlike how bodies process addictive substances such as alcohol or nicotine -- an overload of sugar spikes dopamine levels and leaves you craving moreWhile sugar is easy to spot in candy, soft drinks and ice cream, it also hides out in foods you might not expect -- including peanut butter, pasta sauce and even bologna! Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco, decodes confusing labels and sugar's many aliases to help determine just h...

Are you washing your hands long enough to kill germs? Mayo Clinic video
Running your hands under the faucet with some soap for a few seconds isn't enough to kill germs. To help avoid catching the flu and other illnesses, wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and warm water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, particularly before leaving a restroom, eating or touching your face. Wash your hands for about 20 seconds, about as long as it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice. When visiting a public restroom, use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door when leaving.Poor hygiene in the U.S. hospitals may contribute to 103,000 deaths per year. Voice coach to the stars Gary Catona has worked with Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Whitney Houston, and Sara Bareilles, to name just a few. The system aims to help singers, public speakers, or anyone who wants to enhance the quality of their voice - including patients. I am not aware of any randomized controlled trials backing up his claims, but the presentation is inspiring. Physician Burnout - Mayo Clinic video
Researchers at Mayo Clinic reviewed 54 burnout studies worldwide to see if there is any validity to the longstanding belief that practicing in the hospital incites greater burnout. "What this study tells us is that it is as much a problem for clinic-based doctors as it is for hospitalists and others who work in shifts. It's a little...
