Statin therapy and the risk for diabetes among adult women: do the benefits outweigh the risk?
Purpose of review: The purpose of this review was to examine statin therapy and the risk for diabetes among adult women using a selective review. Recent findings: The literature contains reports of new-onset diabetes associated with statin use. While many studies do not report sex-specific results, there is evidence indicating the risk to benefit ratio may vary by gender. However, the absolute effects are not clear because women have historically been under-represented in clinical trials. Summary: A review of the literature indicates that the cardiovascular benefits of statins appear to outweigh the risk for statin-relat...

Clinical and economic outcomes associated with amlodipine/renin-angiotensin system blocker combinations
Conclusion: The results suggested that treatment with FDC AML/OM was associated with greater likelihood of adherence and lower overall costs than with FDC AML/BEN and LDC AML/ARB, and lower risk of cardiovascular event composite versus LDC AML/ARB. The new patent foramen ovale occluder FIGULLA in complex septal anatomy: a case series
Conclusion: FSO shows high performance in patients with PFO and complex septal anatomy when compared with patients with PFO and uncomplicated atrial anatomy treated by ASO. Its favorable behavior is probably related to fabric features such as the total amount of metal and the presence of titanium. (Source: Therapeutic Advances in Cardiovascular Disease)

Angiotensin II receptor blockade and insulin sensitivity in overweight and obese adults with elevated blood pressure
We tested the hypothesis that olmesartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) devoid of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor agonist activity, would improve whole-body insulin sensitivity in overweight and obese individuals with elevated blood pressure (BP). Sixteen individuals (8 women, 8 men; age=49.5 ± 2.9 years; body mass index=33.0 ± 1.7 kg/m2) were randomly assigned in a crossover manner to control and ARB interventions. Insulin sensitivity was determined from intravenous glucose tolerances tests before and after each 8-week intervention. BP, body weight, body fat, lipid and lipoprotein conc...
