Effects of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy on Academic Grit
AbstractAcademic success has been studied about  self-efficacy and cognitive abilities but one phenomenon that has received less attention is academic grit. Recent evidence suggests that reductions in irrational beliefs brought about by REBT can facilitate increased academic success. This paper reports the findings of a study that used an A–B– A single-case research design to investigate the effect of rational emotive behavior therapy on academic grit. Participants consisted of three students (N = 3) in vocational high schools who experienced a low level of grit. Rational emotive behavior therapy intervention to incre...

Internet Addiction in Adolescents: A Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavior Therapy Perspective
AbstractInternet addiction has gained increased scientific attention during the last decades. However, theoretical models explaining mechanisms underlying Internet addiction are scarce, impeding further development of prevention and treatment approaches. In the present study, we applied the principles of Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (RE&CBT) to gain insight into relevant predictors of Internet addiction. We hypothesized that irrational beliefs are positively, and rational beliefs negatively related to Internet addiction, and that these relationships are mediated by psychopathological tendencies. A sa...

Irrational Beliefs as a Cognitive Mechanism Explaining the Link Between Pathogen Prevalence and Individualism-Collectivism
AbstractPrevious studies established a relationship between the historical prevalence of pathogens and the individualism-collectivism cultural dimension. In this article, we argue that this relation can be mediated by distorted information processes derived from the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) model (i.e., irrational beliefs in the form of rigid/absolutistic/inflexible thinking). We hypothesize that populations living in dangerous environments, expressed through the historical prevalence of pathogens, have developed a psychological tendency towards rigid information processing strategies, which have in turn co...

The Effectiveness of a Cognitive-Behavioral Prevention Program for Internet Addiction
This study assessed the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral prevention program for internet addiction. The participants consisted of 52 high school students who were at risk of internet addiction. The study was conducted with two experimental and two control groups. An 8-session cognitive-behavioral psycho-education program for the prevention of internet addiction was implemented in experimental group 1 and experimental group 2.  In addition, a 4-session parent psycho-education program was implemented only for the parents of experimental group 1 in order to information on how to prevent internet addiction in adolesce...

Stress Management Among Science and Social Science Educators Within Open and Distance Learning Centers Using Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy: Implication for Curriculum and Educational Evaluators
AbstractIn Nigeria's remote learning centers, science and social science educators are responsible for a variety of tasks, including teaching, examination supervision, distance learners' projects, research work, and attendance at conferences. As a result, this study on the impact of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on occupational stress management among science and social science educators in the South East and South West of Nigeria is necessary. With 42 individuals, this study used a true experimental design. For data collection, two stress index measures were used. A pretest was given to the participants before ...

Do the Highly Sensitive People Tend to have Psychological Problems Because of Low Emotion Regulation and Dysfunctional Attitudes?
This study aimed to examine the relationships among sensory sensitivity, emotion regulation skills, dysfunctional attitudes, depression, anxiety, and stress. The study group consisted of 355 undergraduate students (239 females [67.3%], 116 males [32.7%]) aged between 17 and 32 (Mean  = 20.8, SD = 1.90). Using the mixture structural equation modeling, at the first step, the direct and indirect relationships between the variables were analyzed through structural equation modeling. In the second step, using latent class analysis it was aimed to determine individual differe nces based on the relationships between the v...

Effect of Stress Management Coaching Intervention on Adult Learners with Type 2 Diabetes: A Rational-Emotive Cognitive Behavioural Coaching Approach
AbstractIn developing regions, adult learners who are diabetic may not afford conventional diabetes care due to their income status and financial burdens. The present study determined the effect of a rational-emotive cognitive behavioural coaching (RE-CBC) as a stress management program for assisting adult learners with type 2 diabetes achieve reduced stress level. The study sample comprised 119 adult learners who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and were stressed. These were assigned to either an intervention group (n  = 60) or a waitlisted control group (n = 59). While the control group participants were waitl...

The Interaction Between Self-Regulation Deficits and Negative Problem Orientation Exacerbates Depressive, but not ADHD Symptoms
This study is the first to examine the potential interactive influence of these constructs on two differing forms of psychopathology: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depressive symptoms. Undergraduate students aged 18 –24 completed the Self-Regulation Questionnaire, Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised, and Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale. As expected, SR and NPO were found to be inversely related to each other and independently predictive of ADHD and depressive symptoms. Interestingly, their interaction differentially impacted the two assess...

Characteristics of Online Pornography and Interventions Against its Negative Effects in Young People: Results from an International Delphi Panel
This study aimed to identify, among expert opinions, the main pornography features, the type of effects related to its consumption, and the most appropriate interventions to face the negative consequences of this consumption in adolescents and young people. We invited an international multidisciplinary group of experts in pornography and sex education to be part of this study. A two-round electronic Delphi panel was undertaken with 30 experts. The used questionnaire asked about pornography definition, features, and effects, as well as interventions against the negative consequences of its consumption in adolescents. The ma...
