Domains and predictors of first-year student success: A systematic review
Publication date: February 2018 Source:Educational Research Review, Volume 23 Author(s): Petrie J.A.C. van der Zanden, Eddie Denessen, Antonius H.N. Cillessen, Paulien C. Meijer The predictors of first-year student success received much attention in educational practice and theory. However, first-year student success can be defined in various ways. By studying different theoretical research strands, we developed a conceptual framework consisting of three domains of first-year student success, namely students' academic achievement, critical thinking skills, and social-emotional well-being. The goal of this systematic ...

Challenging beliefs about cultural diversity in education: A synthesis and critical review of trainings with pre-service teachers
Publication date: Available online 2 February 2018 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Sauro Civitillo, Linda Juang, Maja Schachner Teaching culturally diverse classrooms starts from embracing beliefs that recognise the strengths of cultural diversity. Research is needed to understand how teacher training contributes to shaping pre-service teachers’ beliefs about cultural diversity. Accordingly, the purpose of this review is to 1) provide a description of main components and contextual characteristics of teacher trainings targeting cultural diversity beliefs, 2) report the training effects, and 3) detail t...

We all reflect, but why? A systematic review of the purposes of reflection in higher education in the social and behavioral sciences
In this study, we systematically review empirical research on the concept of reflection within educational contexts in social work, psychology and teacher education to discern trends regarding the educational purposes that are attributed to reflection. Based on an inductive analysis of 42 relevant studies, we found that reflection is attributed diverse -and sometimes opposing-educational purposes. Furthermore, we distinguished three dimensions to which these purposes are primarily related: a personal, interpersonal and socio-structural dimension. Our findings illustrate both a conceptual and an empirical complexity and ope...

Effective Universal school-based social and emotional learning programs for improving academic achievement: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 50  years of research
Publication date: Available online 18 December 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Roisin P. Corcoran, Alan Cheung, Elizabeth Kim, Chen Xie This review explores the research regarding the effects of pre-K-12 school-based social and emotional learning (SEL) interventions on reading (N = 57,755), mathematics (N = 61,360), and science (N = 16,380) achievement. This review focuses on research that met the criteria for high methodological standards. Further, methodological and substantive characteristics of these studies are examined to investigate the association between SEL and study characteristics...

A meta-analysis of how signaling affects learning with media
Publication date: Available online 23 November 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Sascha Schneider, Maik Beege, Steve Nebel, Günter Daniel Rey The signaling effect states that learners profit from cues that highlight the organization of specific relevant information within materials. This meta-analysis includes 103 studies and N = 12,201 participants. 139 retention and 70 transfer performance measures were used to determine separate mean effect sizes. Cognitive load, motivation/affect, learning time, and eye-tracking data were included as dependent variables to explain possible effect mechanisms. A...

Teachers ’ beliefs about creativity and its nurture: A systematic review of the recent research literature
Publication date: Available online 2 November 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Enikő Orsolya Bereczki, Andrea Kárpáti The successful implementation of creativity in education is largely dependent on teachers' own beliefs about creativity, which has been investigated extensively in the past 25 years. With the growing emphasis of creativity in education, teachers today might not hold the same beliefs highlighted by earlier research. The current systematic literature review sought to identify, describe, appraise and synthesize the most rigorously available recent empirical evidence base on in-service ...

Sexuality education including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues in schools
Publication date: Available online 12 October 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Andreas Gegenfurtner, Markus Gebhardt Should children and adolescents be educated in school about gender diversity, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues? This is a question many governments and educational policymakers discuss in their process of reforming relationships and sex education. However, these reform plans face resistance from parents, religious groups, and political parties. Specifically, opponents argue that (a) children who learn about LGBT issues in school will engage in same-sex prac...

An integrative review of the cognitive costs and benefits of note-taking
Publication date: Available online 9 October 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Renée S. Jansen, Daniel Lakens, Wijnand IJsselsteijn Students frequently engage in note-taking to improve the amount of information they remember from lectures. One beneficial effect of note-taking is known as the encoding effect, which refers to deeper processing of information as a consequence of taking notes. This review consists of two parts. In the first part, four lines of research on the encoding effect are summarized: 1) manipulation of the lecture material, 2) manipulation of the method of note-taking, 3) the impo...

A review of methodological applications of social network analysis in computer-supported collaborative learning
Publication date: November 2017 Source:Educational Research Review, Volume 22 Author(s): Marielle Dado, Daniel Bodemer Social network analysis (SNA) is a promising research method for analyzing relational ties in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL)—activities in which learners interact towards a common learning goal with the aid of computers—because they share the same underlying assumption that learning and behavior are influenced by one's relations. This methodological review examines whether CSCL research (n = 89) (1) reflects the diversity of actors (learners and artifacts) and relational ties th...

Using think-aloud protocol in self-regulated reading research
Publication date: Available online 22 September 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Hu Jingjing, Gao Xuesong This paper reviews studies that have used think aloud protocol to explore self-regulated reading process. The review intends to identify its major contributions and key methodological concerns related to the use of think-aloud protocol in self-regulated reading research. It addresses the following three questions: 1) what does think-aloud protocol enable researchers to learn about self-regulated reading?; 2) what methodological concerns do researchers have when using think-aloud protocol to explor...

Demystifying computational thinking
Publication date: Available online 20 September 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Valerie J. Shute, Chen Sun, Jodi Asbell-Clarke This paper examines the growing field of computational thinking (CT) in education. A review of the relevant literature shows a diversity in definitions, interventions, assessments, and models. After synthesizing various approaches used to develop the construct in K-16 settings, we have created the following working definition of CT: The conceptual foundation required to solve problems effectively and efficiently (i.e., algorithmically, with or without the assistance of compu...

Publication date: Available online 15 September 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Pieter Spooren, Frederic Vandermoere, Raf Vanderstraete, Koen Pepermans Student evaluation of teaching (SET) is the most common way of assessing teaching quality at universities. Since the introduction of SET procedures at the start of the previous century, thousands of research studies on the validity, reliability and utility of SET were written. By means of a citation analysis on journal articles included in Google Scholar, Scopus, and the Social Science Citation Index (Web of Science), this paper aims at mapping the ...

Publication date: Available online 14 September 2017 Source:Educational Research Review Author(s): Marjolein Dobber, Rosanne Zwart, Marijn Tanis, Bert van Oers Inquiry-based education receives much attention in educational practice and theory, since it provides pupils and teachers with opportunities to actively engage in collaboratively answering questions. However, not only do many teachers find this approach demanding, it also remains unclear what they should do to foster this type of learning in their classrooms. Our research question was: Which teaching strategies are used by K-12 teachers when promoting inquiry-...
