The characteristics of acupuncture-like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (acupuncture-like TENS): a literature review.
This study aimed to review the descriptions of the characteristics of acupuncture-like TENS reported within the published literature up to June 2011. A total of 88 items of published literature were retrieved.. 35 authors or groups provided 1 publication (Single Contributions - SC) and 10 authors or groups provided more than 1 publication (Multiple Contributions - MC). In order to gain the acupuncture-like effects of TENS, authors often characterised acupuncture-like TENS using: an intensity that caused muscle contractions (6MC, 17SC), or a sensation to tolerance threshold (3MC, 4SC); a 1-4 pulses per second (pps) pulse ra...

Effects of electroacupuncture on depression in a rat model.
CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that EA enhances memory and improves depression-related behaviors in a rat model of depression. This suggests that the modality may have therapeutic effects on depression in humans. Electroacupuncture may act on depression by protecting nerve cells in the hippocampus. Pain induced by intensive light beam pulse stimulation of acupuncture point GB34 of lower extremities and its associated changes in EEG's.
In this study this technique was applied to statistically correlate the brain activity under induced pain while particular acupuncture points (yanlingchuan of both feet, GB34) were stimulated by intensive light impulses. The brain electrophysiological signals or electroencephalogram (EEG) at F(p1), F(p2) were recorded. The data of brain waves showed a distinguishable raising slope in this study. Intensive light beam impulse with beam diameter of 10 mm and intensity of 14 joule/cm2 was applied to the acupuncture points. In order to quantify the pain effects, a pain intensity function was defined based on the induced pain ac...

Quality of randomized controlled trials in acupuncture treatment of hepatitis B virus infection--a systematic review.
Authors: Zheng S, Du J, Lu X, Zhang Y, Hu L, Wang W Abstract The purpose of this work was to evaluate the quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with acupuncture treatment for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A systematic review of the literature for clinical trials was performed up to September 2008. RCTs assessing acupuncture point stimulation for patients with HBV infection were considered for inclusion. The search identified 70 relevant trials meeting the inclusion. The quality of each trial was assessed using the revised Consolidated Standards for Reporting of Trials (CONSORT) statement, fac...

A comparison between pulsed radiofrequency and electro-acupuncture for relieving pain in patients with chronic low back pain.
This study provides sufficient evidence of the superiority of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) therapy for low back pain relief compared with both electro-acupuncture (EA) therapy and the control group. But the functional improvement of the lumbar spine was proved under EA therapy only. Both therapies are related to electricity effects. Effects of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (1 pulse/sec) through custom-made disposable surface electrodes covering Omura's ST36 area of both legs on normal cell telomeres, oncogen C-fosAb2, integrin alpha5beta1, chlamydia trachomatis, etc. in breast cancer & alzheimer patients.
In this study, Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TES) at 60 pulses/min, which is close to patient's heart rate, was given between Omura's ST36 of both legs of the breast cancer & Alzheimer's patients. After about 10 minutes of TES, NC telomeres increased from 1 yg (= 10-24 g) to 500-525 ng; Integ. reduced from 85-75 ng to 0.5 ng & Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) reduced from 4500-3500 ng to 0.5 ng. An additional 10 minutes TES increased NC telomeres to 800-875 ng, while Integ. reduced to 0.5 yg & CT became less than 0.1 yg. After a total 30 minutes of TES, NC telomeres increased to 1000-1200ng BDORT units, with...

Clinical effectiveness of acupuncture for mandibular subluxation and dislocation.
Authors: Lu DP, Lu GP, Lu PM Abstract Dislocation or subluxation of mandible could occur suddenly without Patient's awareness of its forthcoming. Patient may discover suddenly during yawning, laughing, or when the mouth is wide open that he or she could not close the jaw. It may cause serve anxiety and apprehension, that may put the patient in such a nervous state that may worsen the condition, and also may spastically tense the muscles associated with dislocation. We treated 37 patients in the past and found that, although five patients could be manipulated to have their dislocated jaw reduced to the norm...

Effective acupuncture practice through diagnosis based on distribution of meridian pathways & related syndromes.
This article discusses the importance of acupuncture practice utilizing diagnosis and distribution of various meridians and connecting channels based on meridian theory. The meridian system is considered as basic anatomy for acupuncture, so the corresponding pathways and related syndromes of different channels should play a key role in differentiation, known as meridian-related pattern differentiation. Since this doctrine originated in ancient times and was not so well developed in later generations, many acupuncturists are not able to utilize it efficiently. The authors survey how this doctrine was weakened during the pas...

Phenytoin (Dilantin) and acupuncture therapy in the treatment of intractable oral and facial pain.
Authors: Lu DP, Lu WI, Lu GP Abstract Phenytoin is an anti-convulsant and anti-arrhythmic medication. Manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies with various brand names, phenytoin (PHT) is also known as Dilantain, Hydantoin or Phenytek in the United States; Dilantain or Remytoine in Canada; Epamin, Hidantoina in Mexico; and Fenidatoin or Fenitron or other names elsewhere in the world. Phenytoin (PHT) is especially useful for patients suffering from intractable oral and facial pain especially those who exhibit anger, stress, depression and irrational emotions commonly seen in the patients with oral a...

Contra-lateral needling in the treatment of hemiplegia due to acute ischemic stroke.
Authors: Gao H, Gao X, Liang G, Ma BX Abstract Contra-lateral Needling, a traditional acupuncture technique, means contra-lateral acupuncture by inserting needles into acupoints on the relative healthy side of the body opposite to the injured side to treat diseases such as apoplexy with high efficacy. However, there are not many well-designed and controlled clinical evidences found in the literature. Therefore the present study was designed to assess its therapeutic responses in the treatment of hemiplegia due to acute ischemic stroke. A clinical study was conducted with randomly selected 106 patients who ...

Sedating the apprehensive debilitated patients for dental procedures by combining parenteral sedation and hypnosis with supplemental acupuncture therapy.
Authors: Lu DP, Wu PS, Lu WI Abstract Treating apprehensive debilitated patients (i.e. geriatric patients, patients with cardiac, pulmonary, kidney, or liver diseases, and those with other severe systemic conditions) for dental procedures can cause unexpected medical complications such as cardiac arrest, stroke, asthma or shock, etc. Due to diminishing functional capacities of their organs, sedating those patients with sedative drugs in normal regular dosage could increase the risk of adverse events for this group of patients and can also increase the risk of liability for the clinician. The authors treate...

Acute effects of electro-acupuncture (EA) on hippocampal long term potentiation (LTP) of perforant path-dentate gyrus granule cells synapse related to memory.
Authors: He X, Yan T, Chen R, Ran D Abstract Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese therapeutic method, has been widely used in clinical practice to treat diseases such as stroke, Bell's palsy, Alzheimer disease, Parkinson diseases, dysmenorrhea and chronic pain. Mounting lab data had suggested that electro-acupuncture could alleviate dementia and restore long term potentiation of hippocampus in rat. Clinical data also indicated that electro-acupuncture could improve electrical activity of brain in vascular dementia patients. However, its biological basis and acute effects on hippocampal long term potentiation...
