The effect of "Zusanli" (ST. 36) acupuncture on the bio-availability of sodium pertechnetate in Wistar rats.
Authors: Senna-Fernandes V, França D, Moreno SF, Santos-Filho S, Rogers PA, Bernardo-Filho M, Guimarães MA Abstract The effect of acupuncture stimulation at Zusanli point (ST.36) on the bioavailability of radio-pharmaceutical 99mTc-sodium pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4) in Wistar rats was investigated. Ten healthy rats were allocated into two groups of five. Group 1 (n=5) was treated by acupuncture by inserting stainless steel needles bilaterally at ST.36; Group 2 was the untreated control. Ocular plexus administration of 0.3ml of Na99mTcO4 (3.7MBq) was carried out 10 minutes after every needle insertion. The ...

Evaluation of sedation on electroencephalographic spectral edge frequency 95 in dogs sedated by acupuncture at GV20 or Yintang and sedative combination.
Authors: Kim MS, Soh KS, Nam TC, Seo KM, Litscher G Abstract The spectral edge frequency (SEF) 95 is one of the electroencephalographic (EEG) parameters, which is a relatively simple and effective method to evaluate a sedative status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on electroencephalographic SEF 95 in dogs (4.2 - 6.1 kg, 1-2 years old) sedated by a sedative. The acupoints used were the GV20 point and Yintang point. The sedatives used were acepromazine, butorphanol, diazepam, medetomidine, and phenobarbital, each using a different mechanism. The sedation level was assessed b...

Auricular acupuncture reduces intraoperative fentanyl requirement during hip arthroplasty--a randomized double-blinded study.
Authors: Usichenko TI, Dinse M, Lysenyuk VP, Wendt M, Pavlovic D, Lehmann C Abstract We studied whether auricular acupuncture reduces analgesic requirement during total hip arthroplasty. Sixty-four patients were enrolled in this patient/anesthesiologist-blinded study according to inclusion criteria. They were randomly assigned to receive acupuncture with indwelling fixed needles (points lung, shenmen, forehead and hip) or sham procedure (4 non-acupuncture points on the helix). Surgery was performed under standardized general anesthesia with volatile anesthetic isoflurane and opioid analgesic fentanyl, wher...

Sucrose preference is restored by electro-acupuncture combined with chlorimipramine in the depression-model rats.
Authors: Yu J, Li XY, Cao XD, Wu GC Abstract The present study was to investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) combined with chlorimipramine on the sucrose preference of depressive rats induced by chronic mild stress (CMS). Rats were exposed chronically (1st - 4th week) to a variety of mild unpredictable stresses. The tricyclic antidepressant chlorimipramine and EA were administrated on these depressive rats for 6 weeks (5th - 11th week). EA was applied at points of "Bai-Hui" (Du 20) and "An-Mian" (EX 17) (right side), by EA apparatus (Model 6805-2, Shanghai). Dense (60Hz/5sec)-sparse (4Hz/2.5sec)...

Isolation of genes involved in the preventive effect of electroacupuncture at Fenglong acupoint (ST40) on hypercholesterolemia mice by suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) combined with negative subtraction chain (NSC) technology.
Authors: Li X, Zhang Y, Yan W, Kang J, Kang Y, Lie M Abstract We have shown that electroacupuncture (EA) at Fenglong acupoint (ST40) has the cholesterol-lowering effect in hypercholesterolemia mice. The present study was designed to study preventive effect of EA at ST40 on hypercholesterolemia. C57BL/6j mice were randomly divided into normal group (NG), hypercholesterolemia group (HG) and EA prevention group (EPG). NG were fed chow, HG a hypercholesterolemic diet (HD), and EPG the same HD and received EA treatment simultaneously. Lipid profile of both the plasma and liver indicated that EA at ST40 had prev...

Reduced glucose uptake with markedly increased gastrin releasing peptide, osteopontine & asbestos found in dark black areas of PET Scan of chest wall in patient with mesothelioma.
Reduced glucose uptake with markedly increased gastrin releasing peptide, osteopontine & asbestos found in dark black areas of PET Scan of chest wall in patient with mesothelioma. Acupunct Electrother Res. 2006;31(3-4):247-57 Authors: Omura Y, Shimotsuura Y, Duvvi H, Ohata N, Ohki M Abstract PET Scans are most often used for detecting cancer and other malignant tumors because for most of them, glucose uptake is higher than in normal tissues. However, in mesothelioma, our study showed excessive deposits of Asbestos of 0.5 mg BDORT units, and markedly reduced Glucose uptake of l...

Influences of electroacupuncture on the expression of insulin-like growth factor-1 following, focal cerebral ischemia in monkeys.
Authors: Gao H, Guo J, Zhao P, Cheng J Abstract It is known that electro-acupuncture (EA) has neuroprotective effects on cerebral ischemia, however, whether insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as a potent nerve regeneration agent involved is unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of EA against cerebral ischemia whether influence IGF-1 expression following the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in monkeys. The results indicated that after occlusion of MCA, the IGF-1mRNA and protein expression was down-regulated. EA, given 15 minutes after occlus...

Reducing the in-vitro electromagnetic field effect of cellular phones on human DNA and the intensity of their emitted radiation.
This article introduces a novel in-vitro method for demonstrating conformational changes in human DNA induced by a 5 minute exposure to cellular phone radiation emitted by an actual contemporary cellular phone. Dynamic changes in DNA conformation was determined in real-time by measuring the rate of DNA rewinding (in a spectrophotometer) following exposure to heat which causes the unwinding of the two strands of the helix. Cellular phone radiation produced a 40% increase in the rate of DNA rewinding. This effect was 95% attenuated when the experiment was repeated with the same cellular phone to which was attached a commerci...

Anxiety control of dental patients by clinical combination of acupuncture, Bi-Digital O-Ring Test, and eye movement desensitization with sedation via submucosal route.
We examined clinical applications of the eye movement (EM) component of Eye Movement Desensitization (EMD) on fearful dental patients who have histories of traumatic dental experiences. We also used Bi-Digital O-Ring Test (BDORT) to select the proper dosage of sedative to minimize the adverse side effects. For patients who did not respond well to EM, we used BDORT to select the proper sedative medication and its dosage. In certain difficult cases, we supplemented these techniques with acupuncture to augment the sedative effects. Findings were based on the clinical impressions and assessments of both the patients and the op...
