A “Nutrition Prescription” For Fighting Cold and Flu
Medicine isn’t the only way to fight off cold and flu. Food can be your medicine too. I was on Let’s Talk Live recently sharing a nutrition prescription to help you stay healthy. Below are some highlights from the segment. There are basically two big tricks to beating winter “bugs”: reducing inflammation and boosting immunity.  So whether you’re trying to prevent sickness or recover ASAP, all the foods I mention below will help you. Spicy Lamb Korma I created this recipe for www.leanonlamb.com – it’s a spicy lamb korma that you make in the slow cooker. Lamb is nutrient rich, and packed ...

Healthier Superbowl Party Food and Snacks
I was so honored to be included as one of the nutrition experts the Huffington Post reached out to in order to find out what to eat for a healthy superbowl party. To keep everyone happy — meat eaters and vegetarians alike — I recommended a bunch of great snacks: Lamb sliders — nutrient-rich, full of protein and a little unexpected! Shrimp cocktail — packed with protein and heart healthy fats Veggie platter with yogurt and herb dip Healthy dips like salsa, guacamole or black beans Heart-healthy nuts like pistachios — one serving is a whopping 49 kernals! Whole grain chips — pick one ma...

10 Reasons to Love Dried Cranberries!
The Cranberry Institute asked me to review some of their data and blog about it. As a huge fan of cranberries, I was happy to check it out and share it with you! Are Dried Cranberries OK? I love cranberries in all forms. I have used cranberry juice in salad dressing, smoothies, and marinades. I have used fresh cranberries to make a compote to add flavor and nutrients to foods from fish to asparagus to oatmeal. I love using dried cranberries for a sweet snack – a real fruit snack! I’ve topped fiber-rich cereal with dried cranberries and used dried cranberries as an ingredient in my homemade granola for yummy yog...

Smoothies can be a smart food choice any time of day. They make a quick and healthy meal when you’re pinched for time. They’re great for exercise recovery because they have carbohydrates and protein. They’re an easy way to get more fruits and vegetables, which are packed with vitamins and minerals to give you energy. My favorite smoothie is “green” – super simple. Just add frozen banana, spinach, and protein powder to a blender. Toss in a little ice and push GO! But your smoothie can be any color of the rainbow. So get creative. Easy Butternut Squash Soup Recipe
I recently had dinner at a new friend’s house. We met in childbirth class and we have infants about a week apart! Her husband wanted to “impress” me with his healthy culinary skills. (and he did!) Part of the dinner he served was this butternut squash soup that he was very proud to say was made without any cream. It was absolutely delicious, and he shared the recipe with me, so I wanted to share it with all of you! I calculated the nutritional information which I included below too. It’s perfect for cold fall and winter months as part of a light lunch and has just a few key ingredients making it s...

Plan to Attend 2013 Binge Eating Disorder Conference in March
The Binge Eating Disorder 2013 National Conference will be coming to Bethesda, Maryland this March 8-10, 2013.  Binge eating disorder affects more than 8 million people — more than anorexia and bulimia combined. It’s often not talked about so many people aren’t aware of it. Registered Dietitians / Nutritionists Special Workshop I spoke and attended the conference last year (and am speaking again this year), and it was an amazing experience for me seeing as I have many clients who struggle with binge eating disorder. There will be a day-long track targeting what RDs need to know in identifying BED, effec...

5 Habits Worth “Giving Up” This Year
For many people, New Years Resolutions are set so they “make up” for all the “bad stuff” over the holidays. Usually the resolutions involve unrealistic and irrational goals and whole categories of foods they are going to “give up”, but that backfires because you can’t do those things forever. Not only that, but some of the goals don’t even make sense because they set you up to sabotage your best intentions — like skipping breakfast — not a good idea. Earlier this week I was on Let’s Talk Live sharing some ideas for habits you really can “give up” to trim up the holiday excess and ...

10 Things You Can Give Up in 2013
With the new year rapidly approaching, I wanted to compile a list of my top 10 things that I think you should give up in 2013. Take a look and see how many you can cross off your list next year! 1. Guilt I’ve blogged about food guilt in the past, and still feel that this is something worth mentioning as we move into 2013. Many times the guilt associated with food comes from the food policing that I mention below. It creates a cycle of restriction/avoidance of food, overeating, guilt, and restriction again. The only way to break the cycle is to give yourself permission to enjoy foods you love without guilt or shame. 2...
