Molecular markers in penile cancer

Penile cancer is a rare disease in Europe and North America but represents a significant global health problem due to the devastating consequences of treatment and the mortality associated with metastatic disease. The most important prognostic factor is the presence of inguinal lymph node metastases. Surgical resection of inguinal lymph nodes is the only method of accurately and reliably determining lymph node status. However, in the 75-80% of cases where no metastases are found patients have undergone extensive surgery with no survival benefit.
