Is It Time to Revisit Biologic Mesh?

The management of ventral hernia in the setting of contamination has persistently led to confusing recommendations involving different types of mesh. For surgeons performing abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR), the main goal is to provide a durable repair in complex situations while minimizing short- and long-term morbidity. A growing body of literature supports the use of retromuscular and/or preperitoneal mid-weight, macroporous polypropylene as a cost-effective combination for use in clean-contaminated and contaminated situations with an acceptable complication profile.
