Understanding the Onset and Mechanism of Occurrence of Post-Pancreatectomy Diabetes
There are 2 issues to resolve regarding glucose tolerance after pancreatectomy; the mechanism of occurrence of new-onset diabetes after pancreatectomy and the difference in postoperative glucose tolerance between pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) and distal pancreatectomy (DP). Glucose tolerance is determined by the balance between insulin secretion and insulin resistance. Pancreatectomy usually causes deterioration of glucose tolerance because the pancreas is the organ responsible for the hormonal regulation of glucose metabolism by secreting insulin.
