Variations in Episode Spending for Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Mastectomy: Results From a Statewide Value Collaborative

A growing body of literature supports centralizing complex cancer operations, such as pancreatectomy and esophagectomy, as higher volume centers may offer higher value care. Little is known about variation in spending for common cancer operations that remain decentralized, such as mastectomy. To identify opportunities for value enhancement for common operations, we sought to describe variations in episode spending for mastectomy, and potential patient and facility-level drivers of variation.
