Shared Decision Making for Common Surgical Conditions: What Do Management Guidelines Suggest?

With the advent of patient-centered care, shared decision making (SDM) has become valuable to surgical patients. Surgeons are now interested in applying SDM to their practice, however, uptake has been slow. The purpose of this study was to characterize whether SDM is mentioned in established management guidelines for common surgical procedures and whether its importance has increased over time.
