Where Does the Leak Start? Identifying Diversity Trends Within the Surgery Pipeline 2011-2020

Surgeon diversity is a work in progress with racial gaps remaining at many training levels. Diversity is critical as prior studies identified underrepresented minority (URM) physicians as more likely to practice in underserved communities. College matriculation data show that URM make up nearly 30% of students, leading us to hypothesize that the lack of diversity in the surgical pipeline starts earlier than expected.
