Top-Down Advocacy: The Association Between Leadership and Membership Representation of a Gender Equity Initiative in Global Surgery

Gender inequity is pervasive in global surgery. Despite pipeline programs promoting equity, this disparity persists in leadership, especially in low-income countries and in countries with high Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). To evaluate top-down equity promotion approaches, we measured the growth of an international gender equity initiative in global surgery and assessed the association between changes in leadership composition and member engagement over two years.
