Narrowing the Rural Vs Urban Gap in Cancer Outcomes Using a Model of Academic-community Collaboration to Help Achieve Cancer Accreditation

Disparity in cancer outcomes are often geographic. Within a 29-county service area of Eastern North Carolina (ENC), overall cancer mortality is historically higher than the remaining 71 counties in NC. These findings prompted a call to action within a regional health care system to improve cancer outcomes. We strengthened our network using an Academic-Community Collaborative model, with an emphasis on regional cancer accreditation. Twelve community hospitals are now academic affiliated for cancer care, and over 50% of network hospitals are cancer (COC)-accredited with the American College of Surgeons.
