Reducing Opioid Prescribing for Inpatients Following Acute Care Surgery

Postoperative opioid use is associated with chronic opioid use and abuse. Inpatient postoperative opioid use has never been evaluated. Inpatient opioid use was targeted in a quality improvement initiative with an aim of reducing oral morphine equivalents (OME) used following acute care surgery (ACS) at a large tertiary trauma centre by 30%.
